You’ll be able to play Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 solo from start to finish, according to the game’s director.

The original Division was a multiplayer tour de force, with co-op and competitive elements blending into a critically acclaimed game. Ubisoft’s plans for the sequel are no less centered around the multiplayer element, but the lone-wolf player won’t be left in the lurch just because Ubisoft is emphasizing playing together.

According to Game Director Mathias Karlson, the entire game can be played all alone if the player so desires.

“You can play through the entire story campaign into endgame and [then the] endgame [content], alone,” Karlson told AusGamers. “[But] you can also do the same content [in] two, three, or four player co-op. Or eight-player co-op, two full groups in the raid if you opt into the challenge that we’re adding. So it’s very important for us that you get to pick.”

It’s so far unknown if the 8-players raids will also be as solo-able as the rest of the game, but probably not. That said, there’s always going to be that one power-gamer that manages to find just the right skills and equipment to solo a raid.

Unlike most games which take place in the post-apocalypse (we’re lookin’ at you, Fallout), Division 2 will take place during a catastrophic breakdown in order thanks to a corrupt US government (well, more corrupt anyway). In such a scenario, the world in which the game takes place would be changing rapidly on an hour-by-hour basis, and that’s something that Karison wants to impart into Division 2.

“So the open-world is very important for us,” said Karison. “And in Division 2 we’re making it much more alive. It’s running dynamic simulations of not just enemy factions but also civilians in the city. Out and about acting on needs and goals which generates not just movement in life around you but also activities in the space for [you to engage].

“So for me as a gamer playing through the game, it’s super exciting — what’s going to come around the next corner, you know, because it’s always changing.”

So far, Division 2 sounds like the most ambitious open-world game Ubisoft has ever tasked themselves with making. But just remember, although the game might take place in Washington DC and put the player in command of a guerilla fighter against a corrupt regime, it’s not a political statement.
