The Doctor Who virtual reality game, Doctor Who: The Edge of Time, is introducing a never-before-seen monster, the Hydrorks. These sludgy, many-eyed creatures were teased in a trailer for the game in May, but now there is a closer look at this amorphous beast. It may be only a short peek, but it gives a close in-game view of the monster, the best so far.

The Hydrorks introduced in the video are a blob-like alien species with lots of eyes that blink open intermittently. They seem to have taken up residence in an otherwise average laundromat, filling the insides of the washing machines with their tar-like goo. The Hydrorks are carnivores that serve classic Doctor Who monsters like the Zylons with their unending appetites. They possess a taste for human flesh, making them extremely dangerous for the human players helping out the Doctor in The Edge of Time.

It is unclear what role the Hydrorks will play in The Edge of Time, but they will be joining some of Doctor Who’s greatest villains. Both the Weeping Angels and one of Doctor Who’s greatest villains, the Daleks, have been confirmed by the game’s developers at Maze Theory.

The player in The Edge of Time will play the role of a companion to the Doctor, the current iteration of the shapeshifting alien, played by Jodie Whittaker. The game features escape room-style puzzles that the player has to solve with the help of the Doctor’s signature sonic screwdriver. The VR experience promises to give a new experience to the old villains, and introduces a new twist to the Weeping Angels, who can only move when someone (in this case the player) is looking at them. Players will also be able to come face to face with life-sized Daleks and enter the TARDIS, which is, as promised, bigger on the inside.

It is unclear how the Hydrorks will interact with the virtual reality aspect of the game. So far, the footage only shows what they look like; it does not show how they move or even if they can leave their washing machine homes. Hopefully, as The Edge of Time’s September release approaches, we will get more information on Doctor Who’s newest monster.
