Nintendo announced on Twitter today that Dr. Mario World will be releasing for iOS and Android on July 10th. This marks the sixth mobile release from Nintendo as well as the sixth installment in the Dr. Mario puzzle game series.

First announced in February, Dr. Mario World will include for the first time Dr. Peach, Dr. Yoshi, and Dr. Toad as playable characters, each with their own unique abilities. A trailer for the game also released today, highlighting some updated mechanics that seem to be closer to clear-the-board style puzzle games rather than the traditional Puyo Puyo gameplay that the series is known for.

The first Dr. Mario, released in 1990 on the NES and Game Boy, featured a single-screen playing field covered in multi-colored viruses. Dr. Mario would toss two-toned pills into play and in order to win you needed to clear each virus by lining them up with matching colored pills. The game was wildly successful despite being very similar to Tetris, the 5th best selling Nintendo game of all time, and nearly identical to Puyo Puyo, another incredibly popular color-matching game. Dr. Mario has had a sequel on every single mainline Nintendo console, including the 2013 spin-off known as Dr. Luigi for the Nintendo Wii U.

For Dr. Mario’s first foray into mobile, Nintendo seems to be adjusting the prescription. While you still use pills to defeat viruses, Dr. Mario World deviates from the falling block tile match genre by instead presenting individual puzzle levels in which you must use a variety of different colored pills to clear the board of viruses arranged in a unique configuration. It looks like a welcome update to series and will undoubtedly breath new life into the series.

Nintendo has been ramping up their mobile game development over the past few years and they show no signs of slowing down. Beginning in 2016 with the now-defunct Miitomo, Nintendo has released at least one new game for mobile each year. Titles include Super Mario Run which is believed have been downloaded more than 200 million times, as well as Fire Emblem Heroes which earned a staggering $300 million in its first year, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, which is a slot machine disguised as very cute animal friends.

Nintendo’s next mobile game, Mario Kart Tour, held a closed beta earlier this month. The game is expected to release soon. Hopefully, they can tone down some of the more aggressive microtransactions present in the beta. According to the Wall Street Journal, Nintendo is also developing The Legend of Zelda for mobile, though no further details have been released.

Dr. Mario World will release July 10th on Android and iOS, no health insurance required.
