If you’re a child of the 80s or 90s, then the name DuckTales probably means an awful lot to you. Even if you weren’t a fan of the exploits of Uncle Scrooge McDuck, you more than likely have both heard and loudly sung along to the insanely catchy theme song.

There’s also a significant chance you may have played the DuckTales video game for the NES. Disney actually had a few pretty great platformers around the time of the NES and SNES, and the DuckTales game was perhaps the best of them all. It also contained arguably the second best song associated with the DuckTales franchise, the classic “Moon Theme.”

DuckTales for the NES was a fun romp and was even remastered and remade by Wayforward as DuckTales Remastered back in 2013. And sure enough that version had its own version of the “Moon Theme.” But while this piece of music has a large number of fans, it’s never been acknowledged in any piece of media beyond video games. Until now, that is.

The new Ducktales series has referenced the beloved game theme in one of its latest episodes. In the episode we see the backstory of Della Duck, the mother of Huey, Dewey and Louie (wait, WHAT?) and how she became trapped on the moon. Before she can be attacked by some sort of alien, she finds the alien’s crying child. To soothe it, she sings this familiar lullaby:

It’s a delightfully poignant moment, made so especially if you have any kind of nostalgic attachment to the original game. The song is sung by Paget Brewster of Criminal Minds and Community fame. It was written by Jake Kaufman, Mark Mueller and John Smith with obvious inspiration taken from the tune’s original composer Hiroshige Tonomura.

To include a theme from a level of a nearly 30 year old game shows a lot of devotion from the showrunners to the DuckTales franchise. The show is rather smartly written considering its source material, and the voice cast is made up of incredibly talented actors like David Tennant, Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz (the future Sonic The Hedgehog himself). Kate Micucci, Paul F. Tompkins, and the aforementioned Brewster.

It’s pretty unlikely the new DuckTales series will reference anything else related to the original game. Although I don’t think anyone would object to Scrooge jumping on someone’s head while using his cane as a pogo stick. Still, it’s nice to see a show like this pay homage to something from its past.

Now can we get a dang Darkwing Duck reboot already?
