Warning! Spoilers for Eternals: Thanos Rises #1 by Marvel Comics below

The Eternals don’t make sense in their current form without Thanos. Marvel Comics recently revealed the Eternals’ history was defined by the birth of the Mad Titan, whose conception went against everything the ancient cosmic race previously believed. Without Thanos being born, the Eternals’ existence would significantly change as his arrival altered their course for eons to come. And they only have themselves to blame.

Marvel Comics has told the story of Thanos’ birth before, as his mother Sui-San tried to kill after seeing his horrid appearance for the first time. The Eternal was born with the Deviant Gene, altering his appearance to make him look less human-like, and more like an actual monster. Unfortunately, Thanos would never recover from the ridicule and shame he suffered during his childhood, eventually betraying the Eternals and killing his mother and later, his father Mentor. In the newest run of Eternals, Thanos’ backstory leading up to his birth is explored like never before, showing the Eternals messed up big time by allowing him to be created.

In Eternals: Thanos Rises #1 by Kieron Gillen, Dustin Weaver, Matthew Wilson, and Esad Ribic, the events surrounding Thanos’ birth is revealed. In the comic, Mentor makes a deal with the Eternals (despite Zuras’ protests) to prove the race could recreate naturally and agrees to find a partner to show it’s possible. In response, the cosmic hero’s Civil War is halted, and the Eternals’ minds are reset. Mentor eventually finds a partner in Sui-San and the pair conceive two children. The first, Eros, proves Mentor’s assumptions correct. However, the birth of their second son, Thanos, proves to be the biggest mistake a member of the Eternals has ever made.

By creating Thanos, Mentor changed the course of the ancient race’s history. Not only did his actions end the Civil War between the Eternals, but it also led to the creation of a foe more menacing than their longtime enemy, the Deviants. Thanos has made it his personal quest to destroy those responsible for bringing him to life. Ultimately, the Eternals have no one to blame themselves for allowing Mentor’s quest to prove they could recreate. Meanwhile, Mentor and Sui-San haven’t been allowed to return as both sit in exclusion.

The villain’s arrival has defined the Eternals’ entire history from his creation onwards – leaving a permanent rift between some of the greatest Eternals in existence. The current iteration of the Eternals doesn’t make sense with Thanos as his birth, and subsequent actions changed them forever. It’s going to be fascinating to see if the MCU’s version of the Eternals acknowledges Thanos’ connection to the ancient race because without him being a key part of their history, their backstories change significantly.
