The Expanse season 6 is responding to season 5’s most troublesome flaw in the best way possible. Compared to most page-to-screen TV adaptations, The Expanse stays largely faithful to the original novels of James S.A. Corey (the pen name used by Daniel Abraham & Ty Franck). Supporting character arcs have been shuffled around and there’s some serious storyline compression but, in the main, there’s a strong correlation between The Expanse’s two mediums.

Though authenticity has become the backbone of The Expanse’s critical success, following the books doesn’t always pay off. Honoring Nemesis Games – the fifth book in Corey’s series – The Expanse season 5 sent each main Rocinante crew member on a separate mission. On one hand, this divided focus carved new, deeper layers into the individual characters – Naomi Nagata and Amos Burton in particular. On the other, a major attraction of The Expanse’s TV adaptation is the onscreen chemistry between actors, which books obviously can’t replicate. Keeping the core Rocinante quartet apart throughout the entirety of The Expanse season 5 deprived audiences of a show highlight much too long.

Fortunately, The Expanse course-corrects in season 6, compensating for the previous flight’s bumpy ride. Beginning with premiere episode “Strange Dogs” and moving into follow-up installment “Azure Dragon,” the central team of Holden, Naomi, Amos and Peaches remain together the whole time. And with the Free Navy conflict intensifying, there’s no reason they’ll break up again over The Expanse’s final episodes – at least not until the finale’s closing moments, perhaps. Even better, Frankie Adams’ Bobbie Draper jumps aboard as early as season 6, episode 2. Bobbie essentially became an honorary Rocinante member in season 3, but hasn’t spent much time actually on the ship while a full complement of characters are on board. The Expanse season 6 wastes no time getting every main hero together, and the key ingredient season 5 sorely lacked is finally back.

Even if season 5’s split did outstay its welcome, The Expanse season 6 is at least reaping the benefits of those character excursions. Naomi remains haunted by the emotional scars of failing to rescue Filip, as well as the trauma of her leap of faith into the blankness of space and Alex’s death. Amos, meanwhile, is showing a major confidence boost since last stepping foot aboard the Roci. So dependent on Naomi in The Expanse’s early seasons, Amos’ time revisiting Earth (and getting to know Peaches, of course) has broadened his perspective and calmed that trademark simmering rage.

Nevertheless, keeping the Rocinante crew together throughout The Expanse season 6 is the only satisfying way to bid farewell to an ensemble audiences have taken wholly to their hearts since 2015, giving fans as much time as possible with these protagonists before the end comes. The Expanse is infinitely stronger when the main characters are interacting, arguing, hugging, or sharing a coffee. It would’ve been impossible for Amazon’s sci-fi drama to depart on a high note if season 5’s split hadn’t been immediately addressed, and the speed with which everyone draws together in the final season suggests The Expanse realized something was amiss in season 5.

Sparing the writers a dilemma, Babylon’s Ashes (the novel The Expanse season 6 is based on) also keeps the Roci crew glued at the hip. But if book 6 had demanded the main cast be apart for the final season, it would’ve been fascinating to see whether the live-action series defied its source material to deliver a more satisfying and complete TV ending where Holden, Naomi, Amos, and Bobbie ride as one.
