The Flash will see Ezra Miller reprising his Justice League role as the DC Extended Universe’s Barry Allen. While the movie is expected to be an origin movie of sorts, it will actually be Miller’s fourth appearance as the character after cameos in Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad and a supporting role in Justice League. After the departure of numerous writers and directors, the movie is finally moving forward with Game Night’s John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein directing with a script by Joby Harold and Dan Mazeau. Billy Crudup and Kiersey Clemmons are expected to appear as Henry Allen and Iris West, with rumored appearances by other members of the Justice League like Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Ben Affleck’s (and/or Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s) Batman, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg may also appear if the movie retains its original Flashpoint comic inspiration.

  • Release Date: Possibly 2020
  • Cast: Ezra Miller, Billy Crudup, Kiersey Clemons

The Flash Movie Stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie stars Ezra Miller as Barry Allen, aka The Flash. Miller was originally cast as Flash in 2014 when The Flash movie was first announced. He made his DCEU debut in a cameo scene in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice before reprising his role in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad – both released in 2016 – and then again in 2017’s Justice League, in which his character was fully introduced. Miller will next appear as Flash in the solo Flash movie.

The Flash movie also stars Billy Crudup as Barry Allen’s father, Henry Allen, with Kiersey Clemons playing Barry’s love interest, Iris West. There were rumors that both actors had either dropped or been removed from the project, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. Crudup appeared in Justice League as Henry Allen and Clemons has repeatedly stated that she’s still attached to the film.

Aside from Barry’s immediate supporting cast, there are reports that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, Ben Affleck’s Batman, and Ray Fisher’s Cyborg will all also appear in The Flash movie. For Affleck, it would mark the final Batman role in his DCEU contract, thus meaning he would need to renegotiate to appear in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Interestingly, Jeffrey Dean Morgan has expressed interest in reprising his role as Thomas Wayne in The Flash movie, but he hasn’t been confirmed for the part.

The Flash Movie Features Barry Allen’s Rogues Gallery

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie will reportedly feature Flash’s rogues gallery, which will include the Reverse-Flash. In 2016, it was rumored that The Flash movie will feature multiple villains, which was later reaffirmed in February 2018. The most recent rumor suggests that Doctor Light will serve as The Flash movie’s big bad, with the Reverse-Flash appearing only in flashback sequences going back to Barry Allen’s birth. Captain Cold will also appear as an antagonist throughout the film. As for Caitlin Snow, she’s expected to show up at some point in the film, though it’s unclear if she will transform into Killer Frost.

The Flash Movie’s Story Is Based On DC’s Flashpoint

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie is expected to be based on the 2011 Flashpoint comic book crossover series, written by DC Films co-chief Geoff Johns and penciled by Andy Kubert. Warner Bros. confirmed the news during their Hall H panel at SDCC 2017, revealing the title of The Flash movie to be Flashpoint. Although recent reports suggest that the movie may no longer be titled Flashpoint, that doesn’t mean the story still won’t be inspired by the iconic event series.

In the Flashpoint comic, Flash travels back in time and prevents his mother’s murder at the hands of the Reverse-Flash. But in doing so, he inadvertently creates an alternate timeline – one in which Bruce Wayne is dead and Thomas Wayne is Batman, and Aquaman and Wonder Woman (along with their people) are at war with each other. Moreover, Kal-El never became Superman and Barry Allen never became the Flash. With the help of Thomas Wayne, Barry recovers his powers and travels back in time to stop himself from saving his mother, thus preventing the end of the world.

Although Flashpoint may be the basis for The Flash movie, recent reports indicated that the movie won’t adapt the story page-for-page. Rather, it will take inspiration from the source material but adapt it into somewhat of an origin story. Plus, The Flash’s rogues gallery is supposed to be present for most of the film, not just Reverse-Flash.

The Flash Movie Doesn’t Have a Trailer Yet

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie doesn’t have a trailer yet. A trailer won’t release until six to eight months prior to the film’s release, and since it hasn’t yet entered production, there’s no telling when that would be.

The Flash Movie Doesn’t Have a Poster Yet

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie doesn’t have a poster yet, though there have been quite a few imaginative fan-made posters. It’s possible that a teaser poster may release at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 (or earlier), but certainly not before the movie enters production.

The Flash Movie Could Release In 2020

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie doesn’t have a release date yet, but it could release in 2020. David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! is currently filming, with Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 2 being the next DCEU movie on the docket to film this year. Furthermore, recent reports indicated that Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey will roll cameras this fall, which will be followed by Gavin O’Connor’s Suicide Squad 2 in early 2019.

If Warner Bros. continues to film three DCEU movies per year (as they seem to be doing), then it’s possible that The Flash movie could start shooting in mid-2019, thus allowing it to release in mid-to-late 2020. After all, The Flash movie was reportedly going to follow Wonder Woman 2 as one of the next DCEU films to enter production.

The Flash Movie Probably Won’t Reboot The DCEU

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie may be based on the Flashpoint comic, but that doesn’t mean it will reboot the DCEU. Aquaman, Batman, Cyborg, and Wonder Woman are all expected to appear in the movie alongside Flash and the Flash’s rogues gallery, which makes the film appear to be an adaptation of the Flashpoint comic, but there are multiple ways to implement the story without being a reboot.

Warner Bros. has given no indication that they plan on rebooting the DCEU. Furthermore, the Flashpoint story can serve as both a continuation of the story that has already been established in the DCEU as well as Barry Allen’s origin story, not to mention potentially give Ben Affleck’s Batman somewhat of a concluding arc and finally address the Knightmare timeline. After all, Barry doesn’t know he can time travel just yet.

The Flash Movie Is Directed By John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie is being directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who were hired because of their work directing the Warner Bros. comedy movie Game Night. Furthermore, the studio executives were impressed with the story they created (and the screenplay they co-wrote) for Jon Watts’ Spider-Man: Homecoming. And the fact that Barry Allen is a relatable character like Peter Parker is what really drew the filmmakers to the project.

The Flash Movie Has Had Several Directors

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie has had its fair share of directors. After Greg Berlanti’s original Flash script was abandoned, 21 Jump Street and The LEGO Movie filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller wrote their own draft, which was going to be helmed by Pride and Prejudice and Zombies novel writer Seth Grahame-Smith. It would’ve been Grahame-Smith’s feature directorial debut, but then he exited The Flash movie in 2016 due to creative differences with the studio.

Later that year, Warner Bros. hired Dope director Rick Famuyiwa as Grahame-Smith’s replacement. He made some script changes and also cast Kiersey Clemons as Iris West. But after some initial excitement, Famuyiwa also dropped out of The Flash movie due to creative differences. Because of so many script and director changes, fans got wary of the film, which is why some are hesitant to be convinced that the current directors will stay on board this time.

The Flash Movie Has Had Lots of Writers

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie has also had its fair share of writers. Arrowverse co-creator Greg Berlanti co-wrote a Flash script with Marc Guggenheim in 2013 that involved the Green Lantern, but the screenplay was tossed aside in favor of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s draft in 2015, which itself was given an update by then-director Seth Grahame-Smith. After Grahame-Smith departed the film in 2016, Rick Famuyiwa came on board to direct the adaptation and he also provided his own revisions to the script. Unfortunately, Famuyiwa also exited the project that same year.

King Arthur scribe Joby Harold was then hired in January 2017 to do a page-one rewrite of The Flash movie’s script, which was then refined by Wrath of the Titans writer Dan Mazeau. Considering that current Flash directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein come from a background in writing, it stands to reason that they will make their own changes to the current draft of the script.

The Flash Movie May Film In Vancouver

The Flash Movie Every Update You Need to Know

The Flash movie will reportedly film in Vancouver. This will be the first time in many years that a superhero movie has had its production take place in that city, whereas The CW likes to have all of their DC Comics-based TV shows film in that city. The last DC movie to shoot in Vancouver was Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. However, it’s worth noting that David F. Sandberg’s Shazam! had its production take place in Toronto – another Canadian city.
