DC’s Azrael, who once wore the mantle of Batman, is returning in Batman: Urban Legends #8, which will feature Jean-Paul Valley. Some of the creators involved with the issue have revealed the cover, as well as some behind-the-scenes art, and it’s something it behold.

Batman: Urban Legends is an anthology series that has been featuring various characters from Gotham, such as Red Hood, Grifter, Tim Drake, the Outsiders, and Harley Quinn. Multi-issue stories have been told and some have just wrapped up, making room for others to come. Azrael – who first debuted in 1992 – will appear in the eighth issue. He wore the mantle of Batman in the “Knightfall” arc in the 1990s.

Dan Watters shared the cover for Batman: Urban Legends #8 on Twitter. This cover is illustrated by Ricardo Federici, who has done numerous recent variant covers for DC. His work has included variants for The Suicide Squad, Aquaman, Batman, and Justice League: The Last Ride. Nikola Čižmešija also shared concept art and character studies of Jean-Paul Valley, giving fans a peek at Azrael’s look for the upcoming issue. Check out the cover and art here:

The character designs on display reveal the variations that were tinkered with before eventually settling on Azrael’s final look. A look at Jean-Paul Valley himself has also been shared, with him outside of his Azrael costume. It features him wearing his glasses, in a way that appears very similar to the “Knightquest” arc. The final piece of art teased shows Azrael in his full costume, armed with his iconic flaming blade. Interestingly, this iteration also includes the gauntlets that Joe Quesada designed in the character’s first appearances. These gauntlets hide daggers and have come and gone over the years, but now they’re back in their original form.

Azrael has come into his own as a character over the years, carving out a life outside of the Order of St. Dumas. He has been one of the most aggressive bearers of the Batman mantle and is a big part of why Bruce is cautious about the people he inducts into the Bat-Family. Azrael has had numerous costumes and looks over the years, with one of his most recent being a futuristic armored look in Justice League Odyssey that seemed to be inspired by his version of the Batsuit. These latest teases reveal a back-to-basics appearance that is refreshing to see and which should prove to be very interesting. DC’s Batman: Urban Legends #8 – featuring Azrael – releases in October 2021.
