If you like strategy RPGs, you’ll often find yourself in a medieval fantasy realm or part of a sci-fi soldier team. You’re less likely to find yourself at the heart of 1790s Paris. And you definitely wouldn’t expect to be thrust into a sexy, anime-style version of the French Revolution. Yet that’s exactly where Banner of the Maid puts you. Deep within is a tough grid-based strategy game. You just have to look past all the boobs being shoved into your face.

In this alternate take on the French Revolution, the commoners haven’t put every royal on the guillotine. The crown maintains a shaky hold on the country as Britain and Austria take advantage of the uncertainty to attack. Into the fray rises Pauline Bonaparte, the teenage sister of Napoleon himself. She’s a military prodigy with a special power – she’s a Maid who can inspire her soldiers no matter the odds. As she proves herself in battle, she’s given a banner to carry, and it just happens to be that of France’s most famous “maid,” Joan of Arc. Hence the Banner of the Maid.

All of this is presented in visual novel style, with character portraits delivering text boxes and no voice acting. There is some voice acting in battle, all in Chinese due to the fact that the game is the product of Chinese developer Azure Flame. Outside of battle, you guide Pauline through menus to have her interact with various factions of Paris. Increasing favor with the factions unlocks perks like special unit upgrades. It also allows you to spend time with the very sexy people of Paris.

Most adult women share the same proportions as Marie Antoinette in the middle there, and are all-too-eager to show off their assets. Imagine an outfit like Pauline’s (on the right) but with a huge boob window. That’s exactly how the artillery commander dresses. It sticks out even more when you notice that all the men are dressed more accurately to the time period. They’re given strong, handsome features, but it’s clear that the fanservice goes more in one direction.

And look, there’s nothing wrong with fanservice. Fire Emblem fans are well aware of how Nintendo has embraced the thirst with recent entries in the series. It works because Fire Emblem has become known for its very stylized aesthetic. More importantly, it works because the thirst goes both ways. It feels off in Banner of the Maid because the dudes are presented like portraits of the time. From how they dress to how they pose, they give off an air of dignity and command. Many of the women are posed for optimal cleavage. Again, fanservice isn’t bad. It would just be nice to see the game either stick to its setting or make an all-genders-included declaration of “let them have thirst!”

When it comes to gameplay, strategy RPG fans should enjoy Banner of the Maid. Its harder difficulty setting emphasizes resource management, forcing players to carefully manage their money and target only the key enemies to preserve ammo. The frailty of foot soldiers when faced with cavalry and artillery is also prevalent, turning some maps into true tests of precision. Those looking for a challenge in a setting unique to the genre should check it out. Just be be prepared to see units that look they they belong in a gacha game.
