He’s the literal icon of the Ghostbusters logo, but did you know he also has a name? Ghostbusters was an idea that was conceived by writer and co-star Dan Aykroyd, who envisioned the movie as a vehicle for himself and Blues Brothers co-star John Belushi. The original concept was too sprawling and crazy, so the script was rewritten to make it more grounded and affordable. Ghostbusters became a cultural event upon release in 1984, grossing over $300 million worldwide and received acclaim for its comic performances, special effects sequences, and insanely catchy theme song.

Ghostbusters was made in a time before franchises were in vogue, so none of the cast or crew were interested in a sequel. It was only when cartoon spinoff The Real Ghostbusters became a success that the studio pressed for one. While Ghostbusters II was a fun follow-up, it came five years after the original, meaning the excitement and hype had died down. It also lacked the freshness of Ghostbusters and Bill Murray was so disappointed by it he swore off making Ghostbusters 3. The movie received a reboot in 2016’s Ghostbusters starring Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig, while Jason Reitman – son of original director Ivan Reitman – will helm the upcoming Ghostbusters 2020.

The original film had a marketing ace in the sleeve with the No-Ghost Sign, which represents the logo of the Ghostbusters. This tactic would later be employed with the 1989 Batman film, with the Batman logo being featured on nearly every promo. What some fans may not know is that the ghost in the Ghostbusters logo has a name, with Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd dubbing him Mooglie during production. The sign was designed by artist Michael C. Gross, who would later return to redesign the logo for Ghostbusters II and acted as executive producer on The Real Ghostbusters.

While Mooglie from the Ghostbusters logo doesn’t actually appear as a spirit in the movie, he’s slowly formed into a character over time. He’s seen strutting his stuff in the intro to The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, and he was occasionally voiced by Frank Welker, the voice of Transformers’ Optimus Prime, in bumpers for the show. A spirit dubbed the Copycat becomes a living version of Mooglie during a season 3 episode.

Mooglie got his biggest chance to shine with the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot when the movie’s villain Rowan transforms into a giant version of the logo in the finale. He also showed up as a ghost that can be captured in AR game Ghostbusters World and was voiced by Patton Oswalt (The Secret Life of Pets 2) in Ghostbusters VR – Now Hiring. This VR title let players explore iconic locations from the franchise, and it was Ivan Reitman who suggested Mooglie should actually act as a guide for players.

The canon nature of Mooglie is debatable since in the movies he technically only appeared as a form of Rowan, and the events of Ghostbusters VR – Now Hiring are hardly considered canon. Ray does mention the name of the Ghostbusters logo spirit in an issue of comic Ghostbusters 101, but again, the canonicity of that series is also debatable.
