The Great Season 3 Everything We Know

At the end of The Great season 2 finale there are still plenty of questions to be answered with a season 3 renewal. The Great season 1 ended with a cliffhanger that left many futures unclear with lives hanging in the balance. Season 2 followed this formula with several potential story setups for The Great season 3 taking place in the final few minutes of the season.

The Great season 2 picked up four months after the conclusion of season 1, which saw Catherine (Elle Fanning) choose to enact her coup against Peter. By the end of season 2, Catherine has fallen for Peter (Nicholas Hoult) but has also learned that he slept with and accidentally killed Catherine’s mother, Joanna (Gillian Anderson). After seeming to reconcile, Catherine has Velementov (Douglas Hodge) arrest many of the nobles that supported Peter and then attempts to stab him to death, accidentally attacking his double, Pugachev, instead.

While Catherine has claimed the throne and is now Catherine the Great, there is still plenty more history for the show to explore in future seasons. However, even if this weren’t the case it would likely not stop the show from continuing as The Great has already largely departed from any idea of historical accuracy. So, will The Great return for season 3? Here is everything we know.

Is The Great Season 3 Happening?

The Great Season 3 Everything We Know

So far, Hulu has not yet confirmed either way whether The Great season 3 will happen. There’s no cause for alarm yet as Hulu did not announce that The Great was being renewed for season 2 until two months after it released the first season. The showrunners are clearly on board with making more of the TV series as, along with the cliffhanger ending, they have revealed that they originally pitched the show as a six-season series. Creator Tony McNamara has said that they have enough content planned to take the series through to Catherine’s old age. Ultimately, the question of whether The Great will be renewed for season 3 will come down to Hulu and how season 2 is received by audiences. If The Great is renewed for season 3, it would most likely not be released until late-2022 at the earliest, quite possibly not releasing until mid to late-2023 owing to continued production delays related to COVID-19 across the industry.

What The Great Season 3’s Story Could Be

The intended plot for the potential The Great season 3 has not been revealed, but it can be expected that it will pick up where season 2 left off, perhaps with another time jump like before. The Great season 3 will need to explore how Peter and Catherine’s relationship functions (or doesn’t) after she attempted to kill him. There is likely to be fallout from Catherine having had many of the nobles arrested and it is unclear what her plan beyond the initial arrest might have been. Finally, in ruling Russia, Catherine is likely to face complications from her new war with the Ottoman Empire and could face a rebellion over her failure to free the serfs that could draw on the Pugachev Rebellion. If renewed, The Great season 3 has plenty of questions to answer and will surely provide plenty of unexpected twists as well.
