The 2010s proved to be a time where the film industry was extremely profitable. Box office numbers were typically higher than ever before, with records being shattered and movies surpassing the $1 billion mark several times each year. They came from all different kinds of genres, proving how audiences had varied tastes.

Some of these high-grossing films are true greats that critics and fans alike adore. Others may have made a lot of money but were panned and audiences came away disappointed. Looking at the movies that topped the box office each year of the decade showcases the variety of genres and quality of films that were blockbusters.

10 2014 – Transformers: Age Of Extinction (5.6)

It’s no secret that Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise was mostly met with poor reviews from critics but was a huge hit financially. For example, 2011’s Dark of the Moon surpassed $1 billion, which helped explain how the follow up, Age of Extinction, won 2014’s box office with $1.104 billion.

This installment changed things up, replacing Shia LaBeouf as the lead with Mark Wahlberg, who was a huge star. Reviews for the film were mixed at best, with many feeling it didn’t live up to its predecessors. It has the lowest IMDb rating of any 2014 film that finished in the box office top ten.

9 2017 – Star Wars: The Last Jedi (7.0)

There’s no question that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the most divisive film in the epic franchise. Most discussions online see fans who claim it as the best installment, while others feel it was so bad that it ruined the series. Regardless, it was a huge hit that grossed $1.333 billion.

That said, the intake was a huge drop from the previous entry. Though fans are divided, most critics appreciated Rian Johnson’s film due to it featuring some of the most stunning shots of any Star Wars flick while also featuring some great performances by the cast.

8 2013 – Frozen (7.4)

Every year of the 2010s saw some kind of sequel or franchise film top the box office. The one exception to that is 2013, which was ruled by Disney’s Frozen, an animated hit that broke records and had people everywhere singing “Let It Go” for months on end.

Frozen grossed $1.282 billion without any pre-existing source material or anything like that to help it along. It was just a great movie that captivated entire families everywhere. 7 2016 – Captain America: Civil War (7.8)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe dominated the decade at the box office. They had a movie that finished in at least the top six each year starting with 2012 (including some years with multiple top 10 finishes) and only 2011 saw them not make that top 10. Captain America: Civil War was the only one to top a year without being an Avengers team-up film.

Civil War racked up $1.153 billion to win 2016 and was the third and final entry in the Captain America trilogy. It also introduced Black Panther and Spider-Man into the MCU. The film was praised by almost everyone for the action, plot, and how it balanced so many characters so well.

6 2015 – Star Wars: The Force Awakens (7.9)

Fans had been eagerly anticipating a new entry into the Skywalker Saga for decades. Many viewers felt the prequels disappointed so the hope was that Disney’s sequel series could rectify that. It got off to a hot start with The Force Awakens, which raced to $2.07 billion.

That made it the first of three movies to reach the $2 billion mark in the 2010s. This film did a great job of introducing new characters while paying homage to the ones fans fell in love with from the original trilogy. Audiences were mixed on the two follow-ups and most agree this was the best.

5 2012 – The Avengers (8.0)

The whole idea of The Avengers seemed like something that could never happen on the big screen. Bringing together Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Hulk after their own solo movies and pairing them with Black Widow and Hawkeye ended up being magical.

A massive hit, The Avengers grossed $1.518 billion and set the tone for what the future of the MCU would be. The entire ride felt like the kind of wild crossover that could only happen on the pages of comic books, which is just what fans wanted. Even nearly a decade later, this still holds up well.

4 2011 – Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (8.1)

Movie franchises based on book series have become accustomed to splitting the final novel into two films. In some cases, it makes for a dragged out plot but Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows needed it to flesh out the entire story. That made it so the final entry could just be non-stop action.

This 2011 film culminated the iconic Potter legacy and fans rewarded it with a whopping $1.342 billion at the box office. Diehard fans appreciated how true it was to the book while taking viewers on an exciting thrill ride for two hours.

3 2010 – Toy Story 3 (8.2)

Many fans were a bit skeptical about a third installment into Pixar’s Toy Story series. It was coming over a decade after Toy Story 2 and with both being considered true classics, there was a chance that the adult audience might not be as interested in the storyline.

However, Pixar came up with a great idea to have the plot deal with Andy growing up and his toys feeling neglected. The emotional film was a huge success, grossing $1.066 billion and taking home the Best Animated Feature Oscar, while also being nominated for Best Picture.

2 2018 – Avengers: Infinity War (8.4)

2012’s The Avengers was followed up by another billion-dollar hit in 2015, though audiences were less receptive to Age of Ultron. The MCU built up to a massive crossover that was bigger than ever with Infinity War, which saw the original Avengers team partner up with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

They took on the mighty Thanos as he looked to use the Infinity Stones to wipe out half of all existing life. The movie proved to be as epic as fans were hoping for, reaching $2.048 billion. It seemed to pit Thanos as the protagonist, delivering an emotional story for him and the action that MCU fans were used to.

1 2019 – Avengers: Endgame (8.4)

With Infinity War ending on the cliffhanger of Thanos winning and snapping away half of all life, audiences were dying to see what would come of it. A year later, they got Avengers: Endgame, which saw the heroes embark on a time traveling adventure to bring everyone back.

The unique blend of characters who remained made for interesting pairings and the scene where everyone comes back for the final battle against Thanos and his army is an all-time great cinematic moment. Endgame made $2.797 billion at the box office, shattering the record.
