The Hottest Reviews Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

The third week of September has come to an end, and it brought some huge revelations regarding the next generation of consoles. Those invested in the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X shouldn’t forget that awesome games are still being released every day for the current crop of systems.

TheGamer has been playing and dissecting each of the major new titles as they have been released. These are our reviews of some of the biggest releases of September 2020, including an incredible descent into the Underworld, a complex journey through time and space, a fantasy take on the XCOM genre, and a battle against the imposters among us.

Hades – 5/5 Stars

The Hottest Reviews Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

One of the big surprises during the Nintendo Partner Showcase last week was Hades leaving Early Access on PC and being shadow-dropped on the eShop. Hades is an incredible action/roguelike about the son of Hades from Greek mythology attempting to escape from the Underworld. Hades is one of the best games of 2020, with an exciting gameplay loop, excellent story, engaging characters, gorgeous art style, and a gradual upgrade system that keeps the player coming back for more. If you have any affection for roguelike games, or if you just love Greek mythology, then you owe it to yourself to check out Hades.

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim – 3.5/5 Stars

The Hottest Reviews Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a game that combines interactive storytelling with strategy game segments, in what is one of the most unique titles of the year. The story segments are broken into 13 chapters that each follow a different character, in a complex science fiction story that is best experienced in small chunks and mixed with the strategy side of the game, where the player commands a group of giant robots in a massive pitched battle to save the world. The game has gorgeous visuals and an amazing story, but its pacing can be off at times and some of its puzzles amount to little more than doing unspecified acts in the correct order.

Among Us – 4/5 Stars

The Hottest Reviews Of The Week (September 1319 2020)

Among Us was originally released in 2018, but it recently saw a surge of popularity on Twitch. It’s essentially a party game like Mafia/Werewolf, except set aboard a spaceship. A group of 4-10 players must complete minigames, with one of them acting as an imposter, who the other players can vote on between rounds. Among Us is an excellent game for its small price tag, but there are a few caveats with that. Among Us’ servers have had issues keeping up with the popularity of the game, while the amount of fun you have will depend heavily on the group of friends you can convince to play together.

The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos – 3/5 Stars

The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos (I’m only typing that once) is a fantasy take on the XCOM formula, with a few new elements to keep the gameplay fresh. The only problem is that it’s a comedy game and much of the humor falls flat. This isn’t helped by the terrible voice acting and the number of bugs present in the game at launch. The game wins points for a mechanic that rewards players for missing attacks, but its value is dependent on your tolerance for lame jokes.
