The Hugo Awards have officially announced that they will have a “Best Video Game” category for the 2021 ceremony. This will be the first time that the Hugos have honored the video game platform in their prestigious awards, which bestows honors on the best science fiction or fantasy literature of the previous year. Think the Oscars, but with Sci-Fi stories.
Like most change happening this year, it seems that the COVID-19 pandemic is responsible for the sudden inclusion of video games into the awards. More specifically, it’s the fact that the effects of the pandemic have stimulated the increasing cultural relevancy of video games. Through the official WorldCon (the host of the awards) Twitter, Colette Fozard the co-chair of the79th World Science Fiction Convention shared that, “since early 2020, many of us have spent more time gaming than we ever expected,” and that this new category is the opportunity to celebrate those games that have been “meaningful, joyful, and exceptional over this past year.”
As the Hugo Awards honor literature, it is likely that contenders in the video game category will focus heavily on the narrative impact of the game. As such, there is a slew of titles released in 2020 that could easily nab the honor, like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, which may directly acknowledge COVID-19, or The Last of Us Part II. Of course, the best indicator of who will be nominated may be gleaned from this year’s nominees and winners in The Game Awards.
While this video game category is not a permanent fixture, the Hugo Awards noted in a statement that they have toyed with the “possibility of adding such a category for several years now.” Whether or not the category is here to stay, it is still nice to see video games and their impact garner notice from such a mainstream and prestigious group.
