When one thinks about The Hunger Games, wither the novels or the films, the Districts with the most screentime and details include Katniss’s own District 12, the rebellious District 13, and the Capitol itself. Even Rue’s own District 11 gets a little bit of attention after her heartbreaking death.

But every district in Panem played an important part in creating, and recreating, the society around them. We are going to look at a District right in the middle of it all, District 6. They may not be mentioned heavily in Katniss’s story, but they play a very important role in the rebellion across Panem.

10 District 6 is in the Northeast

Panem is spread out over what was once North America (this includes the United States as well as parts of Canada and Mexico). The districts are not lined up in numerical order straight across the country, say from the Capitol in the west, to District 12 in the east. District 6, for example, is actually located in the northeast region of the country.

They are neighbors with Katniss’s own District 12, in fact, on the east coast. And, like District 12, District 6 shares part of its border with the rebellious/mysterious District 13, which puts them geographically very close to the rebellion as it begins.

9 District 6 is Home to the Transportation Industry

Unlike the mining in District 12 or the agriculture of District 11, District 6 does not depend on the land it is located on for its industry, rather they depend on the manufacturing that has been developed in the northeast. District 6 is responsible for the creation of the hovercraft, trains, and other transportation vehicles used throughout the Panem.

They also provide many of the workers who keep the trains moving, on time, and on schedule. With each district dependent on all the rest for some type of product or another, it is the transportation provided by District 6 that keeps Panem working overall.

8 Morphling Addictions

District 6 has had four victors in its history. In Catching Fire Katniss calls the District 6 victors “the Morphlings” because they seem addicted to the drug, in part in an attempt to keep their memories of their time in the original games at bay.

The fact that they have enough access to morphling to become addicts indicates that morphling addiction might be possible, and a problem across the district as a whole. It is possible, as a district built on transportation, that morphling can be smuggled in.

7 Victors’ Alliance

While the two victors used as tributes in Catching Fire are not given names (again Katniss only refers to them as the morphlings) they do join the victors’ alliance against President Snow and the Capitol overall. They agree and help to keep Katniss alive in the arena.

The female tribute even sacrifices herself for Peeta, understanding that Peeta’s survival is key to Katniss making it through the games successfully as well. Again, they are not named, nor are they major players like Finnick, but they certainly play a part in getting Katniss out of the arena and safely to District 13.

6 Haymitch Trusted District 6

For the two morphlings to know about the rebellion and the alliance to protect Katniss in the arena during the events of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Haymitch had to trust them enough to give them the information about the rebellion in the first place.

Again, few details are offered about the victors/tributes from District 6, but the fact that their District rebelled and was bombed by the Capitol, and the fact that the two morphlings assisted Peeta and Katniss in the arena proves they were some of the good guys and were trusted by Haymitch.

5 Cannibalism

Not many District 6 tributes are very well known. With only four victors in the history of the district, it’s not often a group that receives much attention or many sponsors.

However, a tribute named Titus, who was once a tribute from District 6, is remembered for participating in cannibalism during his Hunger Games. He stayed alive by eating parts of some of the other tributes who had perished before he was subsequently killed by an avalanche, rather than by another tribute. He is one of only two District 6 tributes given names in the series.

4 District 6 is the Largest District

District 6 is known as the largest district in all of Panem. District 6 is both the largest in area and largest in population. They have over 780,000 citizens, which can make the district particularly hard to control. District 2 has the second largest population in Panem, but its numbers do not come close to those of District 6.

It’s population and its instability are believed to play a major role in the number of morphling addictions that appear in the district overall.

3 Very Oppressed

While things are bad in District 12 before Katniss they are often left alone. District 6, the largest and hardest to control district, had no such luck. Peacekeepers are particularly rough on the population and, despite the importance of its industry, the population is the sixth most impoverished district in the nation.

The fact that they have no weapons training, as seen in other districts, also puts them at a disadvantage both against Peace Keeping Forces as well as in the Hunger Games themselves.

2 Rebellious

While the details of its rebellion are unclear, District 6’s uprising during the Second Rebellion was mentioned by Plutarch Heavensbee.

The district suffers for its rebellion as the Capitol Air Force bombs the district after it rises up, leading to heavy casualties. Though very few details are known about the uprising in District 6 overall the sheer numbers in their population likely made their joining the rebellion of great importance to the surrounding districts.

1 Don’t Like Travel

Despite being known for their transportation industry residents of District 6 are not overly fond of travel.

Perhaps it is because so many of them are forced to work as conductors or baggage handlers on the trains around Panem, or because their district is so large to begin with, but overall they are not fond of using the vehicles they are so well known for producing.
