In The Hunger Games series, Peeta Mellark is one of the main characters who plays a vital role in Katniss’ journey of rebelling against the Capitol. Without Peeta, Katniss would never have become the Mockingjay and the story would have played out very differently.
Peeta is a hero in his own right, and there are many things he did that inspired fans. However, he also faced many horrible and traumatic circumstances that had fans feeling bad for him.
10 Felt Sorry For: The love triangle with Katniss
While the films especially focused on the love triangle between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale, many fans found this as frustrating as the characters did.
Peeta clearly did really care about Katniss, and when she wasn’t sure about her feelings for him, many fans felt sorry for him. It was a subplot that some fans enjoyed and others didn’t.
9 Inspiring: Helping Katniss look out for her family
Throughout the series, taking care of her family, especially her sister Prim, is one of the biggest motivations for Katniss. The entire chain of events begins because Katniss volunteers for her sister.
However, without the help of Peeta, and also Gale, Katniss’ family would have been in even more danger. It’s clear that because Peeta loves Katniss that he also loved her family.
8 Felt Sorry For: Learning about his abusive mother
Peeta is an especially kind and caring person, and these are two of his greatest strengths. Given how gentle he can be, it’s hard to think about his own upbringing.
While his father was mostly nice, his mother was abusive. She would beat Peeta if he made mistakes such as burning bread at their bakery. While this is horrible, Peeta is still a much better person than his mother and doesn’t become cruel himself.
7 Inspiring: When he was going to eat the berries with Katniss
While it might be Katniss’ idea to eat the berries, Peeta is also willing to go along with it. This is just the first of many times where Peeta helps Katniss along the journey of the Rebellion.
Peeta is often the person making choices that allow Katniss to survive and manipulate the game. One other example of this is when he makes Katniss seem more likable by saying in his interview that he’s in love with her.
6 Felt Sorry For: Having to be in the Hunger Games twice
Probably one of the worst moments in the series for fans was learning that their favorite characters were going to have to endure the Hunger Games once again.
When both Peeta and Katniss were selected to participate in the Quarter Quell, it was shocking and horrible. While Peeta mostly took this in stride, it’s clear that he was extremely scared, especially about losing Katniss.
5 Inspiring: Giving Katniss the bread when she was starving
One of the first moments that showed fans just how good of a person Peeta is all around is when he gives Katniss the bread.
When Katniss and her family are starving, Peeta gives her some of the burned bread from the bakery, and Katniss highly suspects that he burned the bread on purpose to give to her even though he knew his mother would hurt him for it.
4 Felt Sorry For: Nearly dying in the first Hunger Games
While Katniss might not trust Peeta’s motivations at first in the games, especially when he works with the Careers, all along he does his best to keep others away from her.
So, when Katniss finds him dying from the wound Cato gave him and hiding in the rocks, it’s definitely a heart-wrenching moment. Luckily, Katniss is able to get help from the sponsors to save him.
3 Inspiring: When he did everything he could to save Katniss from the Quarter Quell
When Katniss and Peeta have to participate in the Quarter Quell, they both go to Haymitch insisting that he help them protect the other.
While Katniss is kept in the dark about the actual plan with District 13, Peeta is doing his best all along to protect her while she is trying to protect him. This shows that both of them did care a lot about the other.
2 Felt Sorry For: When The Capitol captured and brainwashed him
Probably the time when fans felt the sorriest for Peeta is when he was captured by President Snow and tortured and brainwashed using Tracker Jacker venom.
What the Capitol did to Peeta was cruel and horrible, and it was difficult to see how hurt he was and how he had been manipulated into hating Katniss.
1 Inspiring: Making the artwork of Rue for the Gamemakers
While Peeta is extremely strong and can be formidable in that sense, his greatest strength by far is his compassion and gentle nature.
During the training for the Quarter Quell when it’s Peeta’s turn to impress the Gamemakers, he paints a beautiful portrait of Rue after she had died in the games and Katniss had surrounded her with flowers. This was definitely one of the saddest and most impactful scenes in Catching Fire.
