The Joker Was SAVED By Robin (Before He Killed Him)

One of the greatest losses Batman ever suffered was the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin, at the hands of the Joker. This tragedy would change Batman forever and the changes continued to ripple once Todd returned to life and assumed his new vigilante identity as the Red Hood. Todd has since confronted his murderer and one can only wonder if Jason remembers the time he saved the Joker’s life and how different his life may have been had he not intervened.

In Detective Comics #570 written by Mike Barr and illustrated by Alan Davis and Paul Neary, Batman and Robin are looking for the Joker who has his love interest Catwoman. After getting information from an informant in the kind of bar you’d only find in Gotham, we discover Joker working with a mad doctor to scramble Catwoman’s brain in order to get Batman’s secret identity. The procedure not only gives the Joker a name but reverts Catwoman back to her previous criminal mindset. After an old fashioned car chase with the Bat, the Joker and Catwoman attack the house of the Bensons, whom the patriarch is accused of being Batman with his family’s life on the line should he not confess. When the truth that Catwoman may have given him the wrong name, Batman and Robin swoop in to save the day (or night). While they are successful in taking down the Joker and saving the hostages, Catwoman refuses Batman’s offer of rehabilitation and escapes once again an enemy instead of an ally.

The defeated Joker can’t help but taunt his eternal nemesis about his loss and Batman is not in the mood. Taking out his frustration and anger on this person who does not care about the lives he ruins on a daily basis, Batman’s unchecked blows could have been lethal if not for Robin’s intervention.

The creative team involved takes us through a Gotham that feels like a mish-mosh of classic and modern age Gotham where the background is colorful, the action is quick and easy and everything seems to wrap up with a great big bow at the end. The story shows Batman and Joker’s give-and-take relationship, where Joker has no problem messing with someone’s mental state if it’ll give him the winning advantage against the Dark Knight and easily casts aside others when they’ve outlived their purpose to him. Although defeated by Batman and the Boy Wonder, he gleefully can’t help rubbing salt in Batman’s emotional loss, because any victory over the Caped Crusader is worth smiling over.

It wouldn’t be the first time Batman loses control and tries to beat the Joker to a bloody pulp. But, as always his support system of reliable allies draws him back from the darkness. Robin calms him down by reminding him that although he lost Catwoman, he did manage to save the Bensons’ and that has to count for something. Although this one-shot adventure concludes, it has a twinge of bitter irony left behind considering what we know about Jason’s demise at the hands of the Joker. Unaware of the rough and bloody future in store for him, Jason Todd performed a type of good deed that you can only find in Gotham: one that comes back and bites you in the ass or in his case hits you repeatedly with a crowbar.
