The heroes of the DC Universe have faced down every manner of supernatural being imaginable, from monsters to zombies and literal gods. But this Halloween the heroes of the Justice League will be waging an all-out war in DC vs. Vampires, a new 12-issue maxiseries from some of DC’s top talent.

In 2019, DC’s zombie apocalypse DCeased plunged the world’s heroes into a world of heartbreak, grimness, and, quite frankly, a lot of blood. The horror setting made it possible to watch Batman die and pass on the mantle, or see Black Canary become Green Lantern. And the success of DCeased has clearly inspired DC to take a swing at another supernatural being. The new series DC vs. Vampires strikes the same vein as DCeased, with heroes from all over the DC Universe facing off against blood-sucking monstrosities.

The first issue of the 12-issue maxiseries is slated to be 32 pages long when it arrives on October 26, 2021. And if the cover is anything to go by, will be a bloody good time. Writer James Tynion IV’s work on The Nice House on the Lake and Something is Killing the Children shows his ability to bring a horrifying flair to the book, and he will be teaming up with Matthew Rosenberg (The Joker Presents: A Puzzlebox) and artist Otto Schmidt (Green Arrow). In the tradition of DCEASED comes a new, terrifying story from the minds of James Tynion IV, Matthew Rosenberg, and Otto Schmidt (Future State: Catwoman). DC VS. VAMPIRES, is a special, standalone twelve-issue maxiseries, that will pit the Justice League against a secret army of vampires, leaving our heroes unsure of who they can trust.

Halloween is the perfect time to watch the heroes of the DC Universe face off against a classic horror movie monster, and Schmidt’s cover does not leave much to the imagination. Green Arrow staking vampires with his arrows is a distinctive image that instantly speaks to the desperation (and blood) readers are likely to see within the pages of this maxiseries. It’s unclear if Batman is stabbing vampires with a wooden stake or a sharpened bone–either of which underscore this maxiseries following the tradition set by DCeased’s sense of gruesomeness that fans so enjoyed in 2019.

The first issue of the 12-part DC VS. Vampires will be on local comic book shelves on October 26, 2021.
