Netflix is ending another rom-com trilogy through The Kissing Booth 3, here’s what needs to happen in the film to properly wrap up the franchise. The original The Kissing Booth movie debuted on the streaming service in 2018. Due to its popularity, its sequel, The Kissing Booth 2 rolled out two years later. Now, it’s set to cap off its overall storytelling with its final installment, The Kissing Booth 3.

Based on the novels of the same name written by Beth Reekles, The Kissing Booth franchise revolves around high school late bloomer Elle (Joey King) as she gets in an unexpected romantic relationship with Noah Flynn (Jacob Elordi), the Los Angeles Country Day High School’s senior bad boy. That in itself should be enough to dissuade Elle from pursuing her crush, but to further complicate matters, she and Noah had to keep their romance a secret from her best friend and his brother, Lee (Joel Courtney). Once the initial premise was resolved, The Kissing Booth 2 provided new hurdles for Elle as she learned how to navigate a long-distance affair as Noah started college at Harvard. She found solace in the year’s new student transfer, Marco (Taylor Zakhar Perez). In the end, Elle realized that she was still in love with Noah, and the pair decided to stay together.

The Kissing Booth 3 comes with a string of fresh issues for Elle. Most importantly, she needs to decide where she goes to college — Harvard so she can be with Noah, or U.C. Berkeley as per her and Lee’s long-standing deal. Expectedly, this will be the central issue in the threequel. But as it’s also set to wrap up the whole trilogy, there are several other plot points that it needs to address to provide a satisfying conclusion to its story.

The Kissing Booth 3 Needs To Reveal Where Elle Will Go To College

The Kissing Booth 3 What Needs To Happen To Properly End The Trilogy

First and foremost, The Kissing Booth 3 needs to reveal where Elle will go to college. It appears that this is a no-brainer, but based on the promos for the film thus far, a significant portion of it will be set during the summer on the heels of Elle and Lee’s graduation. This means that the threequel can easily cover that whole period and not fully resolve the cliffhanger ending of The Kissing Booth 2. Depending on the pacing of the movie, it could very well play this particular plotline out; opting for the characters to focus on their various project over the break and saving the resolution until its very end. But, that shouldn’t be the case. The Kissing Booth 3 needs to show how Elle’s choice, wherever she ends up going, will affect her relationships and most importantly, her personal future.

The Kissing Booth 3 Needs To Fully Resolve Elle & Lee’s List

While The Kissing Booth movies never really dwelled on Elle and Lee’s rules, a couple of them played into the films’ respective storylines. In The Kissing Booth, Rule #9 which states that relatives of your best friend are off-limits was broken when Elle started dating Noah. Subsequently, The Kissing Booth 2 introduced Rule #19 which says that both need to go to the same school — something that might also be defied in The Kissing Booth 3 if Elle decides to go to Harvard. As adorable as these guidelines are, the fact that they’re getting more difficult to uphold means that they need to be at least revisited. For example, Rule #19 could effectively contradict Rule #18 which mandates that they need to be happy with each other’s successes. If Elle can thrive and be happy in Harvard not just to be close to Noah, then it’s something that Lee should support, even if that means them not going to U.C. Berkeley as initially planned. Reconsidering the list could signal this major transition in their lives as they become college students.

The Kissing Booth 3 Needs To Give Marco His Own Story

Introduced in The Kissing Booth 2, Marco was a worthy romantic interest option for Elle, so much so that there has been an argument that she’s better off with him than her actual boyfriend. For what it’s worth, Marco stuck by her as she struggled to navigate her and Noah’s new set-up and while Lee was busy with Rachel (Meganne Young). At the end of The Kissing Booth 2, Elle and Noah made up, and while it appeared as if Marco was totally out of the picture, his lingering look on her implied that he might not be ready to fully give up just yet. But, instead of sending Marco to continue pursuing Elle knowing full well that they won’t be together, it’s better if The Kissing Booth 3 just gives him his own story and perhaps, his own love interest.

The Kissing Booth 3 Needs To Show Elle Growing Up

In terms of The Kissing Booth franchise’s overall story, this is arguably the most important goal for The Kissing Booth 3 — show that Elle has made progress in terms of maturity. As a coming-of-age story, the films tackle quintessential teen narratives such as navigating school, friendship, and romantic relationships. But if there’s one thing that The Kissing Booth 2 made clear, it’s that Elle is still very much immature in both her perspective and ways. Much of the issues that she dealt with in the sequel could’ve been resolved just by having proper conversations with both Noah and Lee. A prime example of this was her suddenly cutting her Harvard visit short simply because she found another woman’s earring in her boyfriend’s room instead of actually asking him about it. There’s also the issue of where she’ll go for college; both Harvard and Berkeley are choices that other people want for her. It’s unclear if she personally even want to go to either of them if Noah and Flynn are out of the picture. With that, The Kissing Booth 3 needs to give Elle her agency; let her decide what she truly wants for herself. Only then will The Kissing Booth franchise be able to call itself a true coming-of-age narrative.
