Azula is one of the main antagonists from Avatar: The Last Airbender, and she’s also one of, if not the, most interesting and well-written. While Ozai might be the ultimate boss to defeat, Azula is the one who is there thwarting Team Avatar at nearly every turn.

While Azula is undeniably cruel and messed up, she’s also very young and given a lot of nuance in the series. But, no matter how you look at it and whether you like her as a character or not, she did some awful things.

10 Not caring that Ozai was going to kill Zuko

While it’s impossible to classify Azula in an accurate way, and she’s not a real person, she does display signs of lacking empathy for others.

Even as a child, she doesn’t really care what happens to Zuko. She knew that Ozai was told by Azulon to kill Zuko, and she just thought it was funny. However, given her young age and how she was also a victim in many ways, this isn’t higher on the list.

9 Bullying and manipulating Ty Lee and Mai

Given that Azula was the princess of the Fire Nation, she could pretty much do and get whatever she wanted. However, she definitely didn’t know how to actually connect with people beyond using fear and intimidation.

While she might have been friends with Ty Lee and Mai for years, she was always manipulating them, and she didn’t really understand what actual human connection looked like.

8 Burning down the house on Ember Island

This moment might have been played for laughs, and in some ways, it’s hard to think of the spoiled Chan as a victim, but it was still pretty violent. Azula as well as Mai, Zuko, and Ty Lee all participated in setting fire to his home because they got thrown out of a party.

It might have been a bonding moment for them, but the fact they could do something like that with no consequences is messed up.

7 Tries to trick Zuko into coming home

At the end of the first season, Azula tries to trick Zuko into coming home with her by telling him that Ozai has forgiven him even though he hasn’t captured Aang. Zuko, out of his desperate need for acceptance and love of his father, believes her despite Iroh warning him.

The fact that Azula cared so little about her brother is very consistent with her character, but it’s still really upsetting and cruel to think about. She was too good of a liar.

6 Hating Zuko because of his relationship with their mother

It’s hard to say whether it’s possible for Azula to feel compassion or remorse at all, and it’s made clear in the comics that she has severe mental health and sanity problems that likely run in the family. However, it’s especially messed up that she hated Zuko so much because she was jealous of his relationship with Ursa.

It’s even sadder because Ursa did seem to love Azula, but Azula was clearly screwed up from a young age.

5 Abusing those she commanded

While being on the opposite side of Azula in the war wasn’t ever a fun thing, it wasn’t that much more comforting to be on the same side. Azula wasn’t a kind leader, and she commanded and ruled with fear and anger.

This just goes to show how Azula and the rest of the Fire Nation royalty were all about power for themselves. They could have cared less about their own people.

4 Destroying the circus where Ty Lee lived and worked

Ty Lee seems like she did have some actual feelings of affection for Azula, but Azula never returned these. She was cruel to Ty Lee many times, but the worst thing she ever did to her was to destroy her new home.

Azula wanted Ty Lee to come with her, so she burned down the circus where Ty Lee lived and worked. It was a manipulative and destructive act that showed how Azula treated those she was closest to.

3 Almost killing those escaping from the Boiling Rock prison

Azula shows many times in the series that she isn’t worried about the pain and suffering of others, but she is extra scary during the Boiling Rock episodes.

She is willing to send Zuko and everyone else on the gondola to their deaths in the fiery lake below. Given that she’s only a young teen, it’s quite disturbing that she has such little regard for others.

2 Taking over the Earth Kingdom

Azula is extremely smart which makes her ability to do cruel things even worse. She was able to impersonate the Kyoshi warriors in order to get into Ba Sing Se and take down the Earth Kingdom from within.

This is one of her worst acts because it puts the lives and happiness of so many people at risk. The Fire Nation was a threat to the entire world.

1 Trying to kill Zuko multiple times

Azula didn’t care about anyone but herself, and she showed over and over how little she cared about Zuko. There were multiple instances where she didn’t care if Zuko died, and there were even many moments where she tried to kill him herself.

When she said, “I’m about to celebrate becoming an only child” was bone-chilling.
