The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

The first season of The Last Kingdom was always fun whenever Ragnar and Uhtred were fighting then making up to become friends as if nothing happened. Ragnar is that brother everyone would hope to have, but the same can’t be said for Uhtred.

From the first time Ragnar met Uhtred in the show, it was always Uhtred who had something to apologize for, and Ragnar always forgave. Ragnar was also the only person that seemed to see the Dane in Uhtred while all the other Danes, including Brida, didn’t seem to consider him one of them. Uhtred, however, came in at times when Young Ragnar needed him the most and saved the day.

10 Ragnar: The Siege Of Wareham

The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

Alfred sending Uhtred into Wareham Castle as a hostage showed just how much he didn’t value him. Guthrum also held Saxons in low regard, which is why he didn’t hesitate to kill Father Selbix, who was tasked with converting him and other Danes to Christianity. Guthrum was also going to end the happy reunion between Uhtred and Ragnar by killing the former.

Ragnar however, stood up for his brother, telling Guthrum that he would have to cut through him first before killing Uhtred. It was the boldest show of Ragnar’s love for Uhtred, who didn’t seem to know whether he wanted to be Uhtred of Bebbanburg or Uhtred Ragnarson.

9 Uhtred: Edington

The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

Uhtred had come up with a perfect plan alongside Alfred for defeating Guthrum. Ragnar, on the other hand, was looking up to Guthrum to command the Danes to victory, which he couldn’t when he saw his men getting cut down. With Guthrum convinced that the Saxons had a superior god to his own, Ragnar was doomed and on the losing side, which is why he really needed Uhtred on the battlefield.

The battle had turned in favor of the Saxons when Ragnar was knocked unconscious, and he faced certain death if Uhtred didn’t come to his aid. Uhtred came in time to pick up the unconscious Ragnar, despite fighting for the opposing side in the battle.

8 Ragnar: The Slavers

The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

Uhtred had the chance to bargain for Ragnar and Brida’s release after fighting for Alfred at Edington, but he preferred to go North with Hild, Halig and Beocca instead which was a bad idea. He went ahead to trust the new king Guthred who in turn betrayed him and sold him to the slavers.

Uhtred would have died like his friend Halig if Ragnar and Brida didn’t show up in time to save him from Sven’s sword. His life as Sverri’s slave was one of the hardest times for him in the show, and it was the time he really understood why he needed Ragnar on his side.

7 Uhtred: Accepting to Go Back To Alfred After Killing Eadred

The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

Since Gisela, Uhtred hasn’t been very lucky with love, which is why it was crazy to go back to Wessex after getting her back. When Uhtred killed Eadred for taunting Gisela, he knew that Alfred would kill for it. He, however, also understood that Ragnar was an oath keeper and would still go to Alfred.

If Ragnar went back to Wessex without Uhtred and a dead priest to his name, Alfred would have had him hanged or worse. Uhtred decided to save his brother by accompanying him to Alfred and confess to the crime of killing abbot Eadred to face the consequences to save Ragnar. Alfred used their love for each other to exploit Uhtred’s sword instead of Killing Ragnar, which still worked in Uhtred’s intentions.

6 Ragnar: Sparing Guthred

The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

Uhtred trusted Alfred, hoping their interests were aligned, but they weren’t, at least not if he succeeded during his mission of defeating Erik and Sigefrid. Alfred had instructed Steapa to kill Uhtred if he succeeded in taking over Guthred’s army to prevent him from going North to take Babbenburg.

Ragnar now had an army with which he could have helped Uhtred kill Guthred, but he let Uhtred and Guthred sort out their feud in a civilized manner. Ragnar didn’t know it but by allowing Guthred to keep his army and not going after his lands, Ragnar ensured Uhtred didn’t pose a threat to Alfred, and hence Steapa didn’t have to kill him.

5 Uhtred: His Second Oath To Alfred

The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

Abbot Eadred was not the best of priests but killing him was the wrong judgement by Uhtred, and he deserved to pay for the wrong. Alfred however, had a thing against Danes and hence declared punishment on Ragnar for Uhtred’s crime.

As unfair as Alfred’s resolve was, he wouldn’t have hesitated to condemn Ragnar to death and Brida wouldn’t have been released which would be a sad end for both of them. Despite Brida’s anger, Uhtred did the right thing by Ragnar and swore his sword once more to Alfred in Exchange for Ragnar and Brida going free.

4 Ragnar: When Uhtred Killed Godwine

The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

Godwine’s death may well have been planned, because he collapsed to death the minute Uhtred slapped him. Alfred was, however, not going to stand by and watch a priest killer walk free, which meant Uhtred was a dead man. The only person that could protect Uhtred was Ragnar, which is why he fled to Dunholm when Alfred gave the kill order on him.

Having betrayed Ragnar and the Danes before, Uhtred, now called the Dane Slayer, was the worst thing that could come to Ragnar’s camp. He was a threat to the alliance Ragnar had created since Ragnar’s allies didn’t like him, but Ragnar took in his troubled brother anyway to protect him from Alfred’s kill order. Ragnar also got Cnut and the other Dane Earls to accept Uhtred as a Dane.

3 Uhtred: Dunholm

The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

Dunholm was the greatest achievement, Ragnar, Brida, and Uhtred made together, and no one fought harder for it than Uhtred. There was just so much to do in Dunholm that Ragnar couldn’t afford to fail that day. They had a debt to their sister Thyra who was kidnapped by Kjartan. They also needed to avenge Ragnar the Fearless by killing Kjartan and Sven.

Uhtred finding the weaker Eastern gate helped make the battle less bloody as they quickly breached the fortress, saving many people in the process. Uhtred also came in to save Ragnar many times during the battle to advance on Kjartan and Sven. Without Uhtred’s sobriety to lead the advance, Ragnar would have lost it as he did during his one on one battle with Kjartan and would have died before getting through the walls.

2 Ragnar: When Uhtred Deserted The Great Army

The Last Kingdom 5 Times Ragnar Saved Uhtred (& 5 Times Uhtred Saved Him)

Ragnar had to save Uhtred from the Danes just a few days after saving him from the Saxons. Uhtred had no identity, and his inability to choose a side hurt Ragnar, but he was still his brother. Staying with Ragnar and leading the great army to take over Wessex was their dream, and he was happy to have his brother back until news of Aethelflaed in danger came to Uhtred.

Uhtred wanted to desert, and with him, Bloodhair’s seer Skade, which made everyone very angry, especially with Aethelwold’s incitement. Bloodhari, Brida, Cnut and Haesten all wanted Uhtred dead, and they wouldn’t have hesitated to do it if Ragnar didn’t forbid it.

1 Uhtred: Killing Aethelwold

Impossible as it was, Ragnar needed to be saved even after he died, because he didn’t die as a warrior, and that meant he was stuck in Nifleheim, the cold Viking hell. Brida wouldn’t even let Uhtred enjoy a warm fire at night because she imagined Ragnar would be colder in Nifleheim than they would be without the fire.

The test was finding the killer and stabbing him with a sword stained in Ragnar’s blood, from Thyra in this case. Uhtred, who was now banished from Wessex after killing Godwine, had to sneak in risking death to get Thyra’s blood. Uhtred also managed to pursue the sneaky Aethelwold during the battle and kill him. That, according to Brida, opened a route for Young Ragnar to go to Valhalla, the place he deserved to be.
