A fan trailer for the upcoming The Last of Us HBO series teases Game of Throne’s Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Joel. The TV show adaption of the hit video game was announced back in March. Updates have been light since then, with no word on casting.

In 2013, The Last of Us saw universal praise for its cinematic storytelling and compelling gameplay. The journey of Joel and Ellie generated much discussion. The highly-anticipated sequel, The Last of Us Part 2, was released this past June. Like its predecessor, the game saw plenty of critical acclaim. With its emphasis on story development, intense action, and chilling enemies, it’s no surprise HBO is currently developing a series based on The Last of Us. Fans have speculated on the casting, with many wanting Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to play Joel. The actor played Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones, so it would be from one HBO show to another. A fan trailer makes a good case for this casting.

Popular YouTuber Smasher has uploaded a concept trailer for HBO’s The Last of Us adaption. The fan trailer casts Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Joel, and Kaitlyn Dever as Ellie. Check it out below.

Comments agree the trailer is impressive, and successfully captures the atmosphere of The Last of Us. After viewing, it’s honestly hard to picture anyone but Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in the role as Joel. Interestingly, Kaitlyn Dever did the voice and motion capture for Cassie Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and the video makes a good case for the actress as Ellie. There is no word on when the actual show will be ready.

With The Walking Dead’s main show coming to a close next season, HBO’s The Last of Us could become the next big zombie program on television. HBO’s budget should allow for an accurate, terrifying live-action take on the game’s creepy villains. If the series eventually adapts the events of the second game, people would surely be on the edge of their seats if the Rat King appears in all its grotesque glory.
