Wizards of the Coast is hoping the latest Magic the Gathering Arena update will fix a number of the long-time bugs that have plagued the game.

Today’s update (September 16) will bring a lot to the game, thanks to the launch of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt and a whole Standard set rotation (plug the unhatching of the Renewal Egg). While new content is always exciting, players will also be pleased to hear fixes for four of the game’s most persistent bugs are being rolled out at the same time.

The bugs listed in the update blog post affecting include Commander weighting (where strong Commanders often got matched up against lower-power ones), direct challenges not adding to your quest progress, and ensuring the Welcome Pack that new players receive actually gives the correct booster packs. Players affected by that last issue will be receiving a “mass grant” to give them the packs they should have received.

Most importantly, the recent and nasty bug that stopped players from progressing in their ranks is being sorted out. The bug affected players who hit the Mythic rank in Limited play, forcing them back to “Beginner” rank, where neither wins nor losses could move their position any further. This effectively made events unplayable, as affected players couldn’t earn rewards, and unaffected players may have been unfairly winning and succeeding as a result.

Wizards has said that, though it thinks it has fixed the issue so that it won’t impact anybody else, it is not sure whether it will fix players who have already been hit by it. It has said that it is a “very unusual bug”, but that it will “aggressively look for a solution”. With Midnight Hunt’s launch, and all of the events that will come with it, just hours away, hopefully those solutions will be quick enough to help impacted players.

Magic Arena has been struggling with technical issues for quite a while now (anecdotally, people reference August’s Historic Horizons 2 as when it seemed to get worse). It reached a point where, earlier this month, it gave out a free code for packs and cosmetics as compensation to all players affected. Both PARCELMYR and ScaleUp will expire before today’s update, so you have mere hours to redeem them.
