A new video shows how Baby Yoda’s nanny droid IG-11 was brought to life on The Mandalorian. The little green alien known as The Child was of course a big part of why The Mandalorian became a huge hit on Disney+, but the internet’s favorite mystery baby wasn’t the only memorable character to be introduced on the show.

Obviously, the biggest new character featured on the show was the titular Mandalorian himself, a mysterious bounty hunter who miraculously captured the audience’s sympathy despite not showing his face until the final episode of season 1. Another character who managed to become a fan favorite despite a lack of facial expression was IG-11, the lanky droid (modeled after Empire Strikes Back character IG-88) who started off the season as a bounty hunter programmed to terminate Baby Yoda but ended it as the little green guy’s highly protective nanny. Voiced by Taika Waititi, IG-11 surprisingly had one of season 1’s most satisfying arcs, becoming involved in some of the show’s most exciting action scenes before ultimately sacrificing himself to save Baby Yoda in the finale.

Of course, with an effects-heavy show like The Mandalorian, an incredible amount of effort is put into making each and every character come to life. A new video from Hybride Technologies breaks down the process of creating IG-11, from rough early renderings to full animation, and indeed it’s astonishing to realize how many steps animators went through to create the character and integrate him seamlessly into the finished show. Considering all the resources Disney has to create a show like The Mandalorian, it’s no surprise that the series boasts state of the art special effects. But just having the money to make effects doesn’t necessarily mean the finished product will prove to be impressive, as there’s still a strong human element at play behind the scenes. Clearly, a lot of care and attention was put into making IG-11, and all that work paid off with a character who was indeed memorable.

Of course, credit for IG-11 must also be given to Waititi, who indeed earned an Emmy nomination for his voice work (the show snagged 15 nominations overall, including a surprise one for Best Drama Series). Ultimately, many people had to put in many hours of labor in order to bring IG-11 and all of The Mandalorian to life, a fact that’s easy to forget given how seamless the show seems to be. It remains to be seen if the show will be able to maintain a consistent level of storytelling as more characters are introduced in season 2, but there’s little doubt that the effects people who bring the show to life are operating at a high level, and it will be fascinating to see what new things they create when the show returns to Disney+ later in 2020.
