Randall Flagg is one of horror writer Stephen King’s most revisited characters, but he goes by many different names – here’s a recap of some of his more notable aliases. Randall Flagg is one of the most popular – and not to mention prolific – of all Stephen King’s bad guys. Since he was first introduced in the author’s epic post-apocalyptic novel The Stand in 1978, Randall Flagg has appeared in several other King works including Hearts In Atlantis and The Dark Tower series.
Because so many of Stephen King’s books have been adapted into movies and TV shows, his most enduring antagonist has gotten the big and small screen treatment too. Randall Flagg was first played by Homeland actor Jamey Sheridan in The Stand miniseries that aired on ABC in 1994 and later by Matthew McConaughey in Nikolaj Arcel’s big screen adaptation of The Dark Tower. Soon, Alexander Skarsgård will play the literary horror villain in a new miniseries take on The Stand set to air on CBS All Access in 2020. Ahead of Skarsgård’s debut as Randall Flagg, let’s take a look back at the villain’s many pseudonyms, starting with his first book appearance in The Stand.
One common theme among Randall Flagg’s notable aliases are the initials R.F. as seen in The Stand in which he goes by the names Richard Frye, Robert Franq, Ramsey Forrest, Russell Faraday, Robert Freemont, and Richard Freemantle. Various characters in The Stand also refer to him by nicknames including The Walking Dude, The Midnight Rambler and Old Creeping Judas.
The R.F. theme would continue in The Dark Tower series which saw Randall Flagg variously adopt the aliases Richard Fannin and Rudin Filaro. The Dark Tower books also revealed that Flagg’s birth name is actually Walter Padick but that he also goes by the names Walter O’Dim and Walter Hodji in addition to the pseudonyms Marten Broadcloak and John Farson. In his most recent Dark Tower book The Wind Through The Keyhole, Stephen King refers to Randall Flagg as The Covenant Man.
In Stephen King’s 1982 fantasy novel The Eyes Of The Dragon, Flagg uses the names Browson and Bill Hinch while in Hearts In Atlantis he appears as Raymond Fiegler, the leader of a militant activist group in the 1960s. Randall Flagg’s most recent book appearance came in the 2017 novel Gwendy’s Button Box which was co-written by Stephen King and Richard Chizmar and sees Flagg adopt the persona of Richard Farris.
