Warning: SPOILERS for The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Episodes 1-4.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has forgotten that Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) is an expert sniper. Along with Sam Wilson AKA The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Bucky has been trying to stop the Flag-Smashers led by Karli Morgenthau (Erin Kellyman) from resetting the world to how it was during the five years before the Blip returned everyone Thanos (Josh Brolin) killed with the Infinity Gauntlet back to life. Wilson and Barnes also recruited the help of Baron Helmut Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) and witnessed the transformation of the new Captain America, John Walker (Wyatt Russell), into a twisted super-soldier.

Even before Hydra captured Bucky and turned him into the brainwashed, cybernetic assassin they dubbed the Winter Soldier, Barnes was trained as a sniper. As seen in Captain America: The First Avenger, when Bucky and his best friend Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) learned that the United States entered World War II in 1941, they both attempted to join the U.S. Army. Rogers was rejected as 4F but Barnes was enlisted and underwent basic training at Camp McCoy in Wisconsin. Bucky underwent sniper training and he earned the rank of Sergeant. In 1943, Sgt. Barnes returned home to Brooklyn and took Steve to the Stark Expo, which was their last night out together before Bucky shipped out overseas. Bucky’s sniper expertise played a key role in the exploits of his division, the 107th Infantry Regiment, but they were captured and became Hydra POWs. Before Steve Rogers, who was now Captain America, rescued the 107th, Bucky was experimented on by Arnim Zola (Toby Jones) and received a variant of the Super Soldier Serum, which was essential later on when Hydra recaptured Barnes and turned him into the Winter Soldier.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier hasn’t showcased Bucky as a sniper and this is part of his rehabilitation from being the Winter Soldier. After he was resurrected in Avengers: Endgame, Barnes has been trying to put his decades as an assassin behind him. Bucky has been pardoned for his crimes, is mandated to seek therapy, and he’s been struggling to repent by forming relationships with the families of his victims. Bucky has also used his intel to turn in Hydra agents he helped install in positions of power as the Winter Soldier. Even though Barnes still has a cybernetic limb – Bucky’s current Vibranium arm is a gift from Wakanda to replace the one Hydra gave him – he’s been adamant that he is “no longer the Winter Soldier”, although he has been using his skills and abilities to help Sam Wilson stop the Flag-Smashers.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier was the last time Bucky utilized his sniper skills. The Winter Soldier was assigned to assassinate Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) after the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. “noticed” something was very wrong with the Project Insight Helicarriers and he pieced together that Hydra had infiltrated the global spy agency. Fury escaped the Winter Soldier’s original assassination attempt on the streets of Washington, D.C. but he tracked this prey to Steve Rogers’ apartment. The Winter Soldier sniped Fury with a high-caliber round and Bucky confronted Captain America for the first time since 1945. Bucky also used a rifle during the Battle of Wakanda in Avengers: Infinity War when the superheroes teamed with the army of Wakanda to battle the Children of Thanos.

Now that Bucky is himself again – and he’s struggling to come to terms with who Bucky Barnes really is – being a sniper is an unpleasant reminder of Bucky’s dark past as an assassin. While Bucky can’t really be blamed for the crimes that Hydra forced him to commit, he’s haunted by the fact that he remembers every single one of the Winter Soldier’s victims. Bucky is trying to do the right thing now, and also honor the example set by his best friend Steve Rogers, and using his skills as a sniper to kill skews too close to being the Winter Soldier once more. However, Bucky may yet be forced to become a sniper again before The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is over.
