Warning: This article contains spoilers for Hawkeye episodes 3 & 4.

The two latest episodes of Hawkeye gave hints about the involvement of Kingpin; however, the series is setting up the MCU’s Wilson Fisk to be very different from the character in Netflix’s Daredevil series. Throughout episodes 3 and 4 of Marvel’s Hawkeye, there have been numerous mentions to a mysterious figure dubbed “Uncle” and it is widely believed that this ambiguous crime boss is none other than Wilson Fisk and that Vincent D’Onofrio will be reprising his role from the Daredevil series. All these teases have not come to fruition yet, and with two episodes left until Hawkeye wraps up, viewers are still patiently waiting for a glimpse of Marvel’s most popular criminal overlord.

Ever since the cancellation of Netflix’s Daredevil, viewers have been clamoring for the cast of the show to reprise their roles in the main MCU. Kevin Feige’s recent confirmation that Charlie Cox will play the MCU’s Daredevil, along with the rumors and teases of D’Onofrio’s involvement in Hawkeye, have audiences at the edge of their seats waiting for Kingpin’s return. While Wilson Fisk’s appearance in Hawkeye is looking more and more likely each episode, the show seems to be hinting that the MCU version of Fisk may be very different than the one MCU followers are used to.

It is yet to be confirmed whether or not people will get to see the Kingpin in the MCU again. It is evident, however, that the MCU’s Wilson Fisk will play a different role from the one he did on Daredevil. The latest Marvel Disney+ series is setting up Hawkeye’s Kingpin as a man who stays hidden and operates from the shadows, unlike his Netflix counterpart, who was very much a public figure. Other than the fact that starting the character off with a clean slate will give Marvel Studios more creative freedom with the character, having the rebooted version of Wilson Fisk orchestrate crime from behind the scenes would establish him as a more menacing threat, and could also be used as an excuse for his absence from the MCU thus far.

Hawkeye episodes 3 and 4 have clearly declared the presence of a powerful individual that Maya Lopez, a.k.a. Echo (Alaqua Cox) and the Tracksuit Mafia answer to. It is also worth noting that Eleanor Bishop (Vera Farmiga) has mentioned having “powerful friends” and that Eleanor’s phone call in Hawkeye episode 4 was to an unknown individual. All of these events could hint at Wilson Fisk controlling this entire criminal operation from the shadows, with the Sloan LTD company set up as a front that cannot be linked back to him. This is in clear contrast to his character in the Netflix universe, where Wilson Fisk was a public figure with deep connections to influential millionaires and political figures. Over the course of the three seasons of Daredevil, the Kingpin has organized fundraisers and given public speeches, clearly showing that he is not afraid to be in the spotlight.

Introducing the Kingpin as a shadowy figure that operates behind the scenes begs the question of what other events he may have been responsible for in the MCU, and how long has he been orchestrating crime anonymously. Another twist is that the Kingpin could be ready to step into the light by purchasing Avengers Tower in Hawkeye. All of these are questions audiences are hoping to receive answers for in the last two Hawkeye episodes. With Charlie Cox’s confirmed return to the MCU, it is only a matter of time until Vincent D’Onofrio puts on the white suit again, and that will open up various plot possibilities for the future of the MCU, including Wilson Fisk being a villain in Tom Holland’s second Spider-Man trilogy, or being responsible for a Dark Avengers team instead of Norman Osborn, who traditionally occupies the role in the comics.
