The Most Unexpected Friendships On Big Brother

Big Brother is all about lying, backstabbing, and manipulating the way to the end. With that said, houseguests are stuck in a house together for an entire summer without any contact with the outside world, so it’s also about bonding. While it’s no surprise that Big Brother has spawned many romances, some of which have even resulted in marriage, there have also been plenty of genuine platonic friendships on Big Brother.

Some of these friendships were easily predicted, such as Brett and Winston, who were so similar to one another, it was obvious that they would get along. But when it comes to others, no one in the house, or even viewers, saw their tight bonds coming.

9 Jason And Alex (Season 19)

The Most Unexpected Friendships On Big Brother

Jason was the cowboy, complete with tight jeans, plaid, and cowboy hat while Alex was the vivacious young woman who loved to express her quirky style by wearing a headband with cat ears. From the outside, they were complete opposites. But their friendship and alliance on Big Brother was one of the tightest on the show, and certainly of their season.

Alex was left to compete on her own when Jason was blindsided and sent home. But together, they made a dynamic and entertaining duo that no one in the house or out would have suspected to have had so much in common and get along so well.

8 Austin And Liz

The Most Unexpected Friendships On Big Brother

Austin and Liz technically weren’t solely friends, as they also had a romantic relationship, making one of the most surprising romances from Big Brother. It was baffling to everyone since they both came from very different worlds and presumably would never have gotten together in the real world, much less dated. What’s more, they both despised one another at first.

But they seemed to eventually get along well, and even dated for a short period of time outside of the house. Their friendship/showmance didn’t help either of them win the game, but it did help get Liz to a second-place finish.

7 Mike “Boogie” And Dr. Will

The Most Unexpected Friendships On Big Brother

Mike wore loud clothes, a baseball cap backwards, and sports jerseys while Will was the charming, put-together professional who looked like he was torn right out of a magazine. But together, they made up one of the most entertaining alliances on Big Brother, not to mention the most memorable.

As Chilltown, they lied, cheated, and manipulated their way in the game, making sure to use every diary session to animatedly ridicule everyone in the house who was falling right into their traps. The pair remained friends for some time outside of the game.

6 Becky And Johnny Mac

The Most Unexpected Friendships On Big Brother

Becky was the attractive, confident, and competitive young woman who was a physical and mental threat in the game. Johnny Mac was the awkward, loud, and quirky personality who became frustrated with always being used as a pawn.

Yet the pair somehow became close in the house, despite no one predicting they would have anything in common. Their other closest ally, Steve, went on to win that season. Whether Becky was aligning herself strategically with the “nerds” or simply found she had more in common with them than the others remains a mystery. Nonetheless, they were an odd but adorable pairing.

5 Jason And Da’Vonne (Season 17)

The Most Unexpected Friendships On Big Brother

No one could have predicted that the sassy New Jersey boy would become best friends with the outspoken and passionate mom from California. Yet somehow, Jason and Da’Vonne two were like peas in a pod. They forged a tight and instant bond that made it seem as though they had known one another for years.

They were in an alliance together with other players that ended up blindsiding Jason and sending him home, fearing how big of a threat he was in competitions as well as his knowledge of the game. Both Jason and Da’Vonne both tended to speak their minds openly, which might be what drew the otherwise unlikely pair together.

4 Janelle And Kaysar

The Most Unexpected Friendships On Big Brother

The blonde bombshell and the quiet and reserved Muslim man became best friends in the house, against all odds. This didn’t just happen in one season, but several, including, most recently, All-Stars, where they reunited for the first time in more than a decade.

There was an ease about their relationship, which was completely platonic but built entirely on mutual trust, respect, and great conversation. Both remain two of the best players to have never won Big Brother but should have.

3 Matt And Cereal (Season 19)

The Most Unexpected Friendships On Big Brother

Matt’s showmance with Raven aside, one of the most cringe-worth showmances on Big Brother, his most unexpected friendship on Big Brother, at least to others in the house and viewers at home, was with cereal.

There have been houseguests in other seasons who have demonstrated a particular affinity for a certain type of food, like Jackson with his watermelons. But Matt ate cereal all day, every day. Interestingly, his favorites were cereals typically eaten by, and marketed to, children, like Reese’s Puffs, Cap’n Crunch, and Lucky Charms. He told US Magazine. that he estimates he ate about 300 bowls of cereal during his weeks in the house.

2 Kaycee And Tyler (Season 20)

The Most Unexpected Friendships On Big Brother

Kaycee and Tyler were both athletic, charming, friendly, and genuine people, so it makes sense that they gravitated towards one another even though they came from very different backgrounds that would never put the two together. Kaycee, who went on to win the game, was a pro-football player from San Diego and Tyler, who was runner-up, was a social media influencer and former lifeguard from South Carolina.

It’s no surprise the two rank among the most likable cast members from Big Brother 20. Even though they shared similar personalities, most people would have expected them to be bitter rivals, but one of the strongest, most genuine, and solid alliances in the game.

1 Tom Green And Kato Kaelin (Celebrity Big Brother, Season 2)

Good times last night!! Kato! Tomato!! Woo hoo!! https://t.co/72uKOxIzZB

Tom Green is the eccentric actor, comedian, rapper, and filmmaker. Kato Kaelin is best known for being a former friend of O.J. Simpson and a witness to the murder case. The pair couldn’t have come from more different worlds and sides of celebrity, yet they found solace in one another on Celebrity Big Brother.

During their late-night chats in the house as well as their diary sessions, they often referenced how unlikely their friendship was and how neither could ever have imagined getting along with the other had they not been in the same house together on the show. The pair remained friends even after leaving the house.
