After previous installments teased Harvey Dent’s eventual turn into Two-Face, Batman: Earth One Volume 3 might finally see the villain as a main antagonist.

Writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank return as the creative team behind Batman: Earth One with the third chapter, six years after Volume 2 released in 2015 and almost a full decade since Volume 1 debuted in 2012. The Earth One initiative began with Superman: Earth One in 2010, and has been an attempt to reimagine DC Comics’ most iconic superheroes with more grounded and refreshing takes from popular writers and artists. For the sake of comparison, Earth One is what Ultimates is to Marvel, providing an outline for how these characters might translate to film.

In the upcoming third volume of Batman: Earth One, Batman is investigating a gang that is supposedly funded by former D.A. Harvey Dent, who was believed to be dead. It seems to be a clear tease at Two-Face potentially playing a major part in the story. Meanwhile, Harvey’s sister Jessica is serving Gotham City as mayor, after being left with some brutal scars thanks to the Riddler in the previous installment. As Batman investigates his leads, he begins to think Harvey might somehow be back, seeking revenge on the city he once protected. Along the way, Batman encounters Waylon “Killer Croc” Jones and a newcomer (in this universe), Catwoman. The official cover for Batman: Earth One Volume 3 has been released as seen below:

While Batman: Earth One notably rewrote Alfred Pennyworth as an ex-military bodyguard instead of the posh butler many fans remember, Two-Face’s backstory remained mostly the same. Although the Riddler was responsible for Harvey’s presumed disfigurement this time around, readers can imagine he will likely resemble his classic appearance when they see him again. It remains unclear if Harvey will actually go by the name “Two-Face,” or if he will even want to be seen by anyone. In previous iterations, Two-Face is seemingly proud of his appearance, and wants to disturb people with his deformity. Since Harvey might be pulling the strings of a gang from the shadows, it seems like Batman will have to put in a lot of work before he actually faces his old friend.

Much like past versions, Bruce had known Harvey before the accident. In Earth One Volume 2, Bruce recounts growing up with Jessica and Harvey as kids. Readers can imagine now that Jessica Dent is Gotham’s mayor, she might pose a conflict of interest for her brother, who wants to cause harm to the city. Unless, Jessica is leveraging her position as mayor and the siblings are working together. After all, she endured much of the same scarring that Harvey did from the Riddler. Batman: Earth One Volume 3 releases on June 8, 2021.
