Wizards of the Coast is supposed to make a big announcement about the next Dungeons & Dragons book today, but it looks like Amazon got a little eager. The online retailer put up the details for the March 17 release, which looks to be titled Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount. Wildemount is the campaign setting of the second campaign of Critical Role, the mega-hit D&D livestream run by Matthew Mercer. Mercer himself is listed as a contributor on the book, making it a true fusion of Critical Role content and official Wizards approval.

Anyone can look at the details of Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount on its Amazon page. They can even pre-order despite it not being officially announced as of this writing. What’s interesting is that the book seems to be both a resource of new rules and a pre-written campaign. That means homebrew DMs can take only the options they like for use in their own campaigns, and Critical Role fans can attempt to recreate what they see in the show.

At the moment, the details are still rather sparse. Amazon has only leaked the back-of-the-book description and hasn’t even revealed the cover. From that description, the book is confirmed to include new “subclasses, spells, magic items, monsters, and more.” There will also be four different pre-made adventures and the “heroic chronicle system” for creating expanded backstories.

Early fan reaction on message boards has been mixed. Naturally this will be an exciting release for Critical Role fans. Those who want nothing to do with the series were disappointed by the initial reveal. Rather than do a crossover with a popular show, they would rather see Wizards of the Coast bring back one of its older settings.

As time goes on, though, commenters are beginning to see the exciting prospects this book will bring. Mercer definitely created some exciting options for D&D player characters through Critical Role. New spells and subclasses created with his help will bring dynamic things to the game. For one, we can definitely expect the famous Gunslinger subclass to appear. Even if one isn’t a fan of Critical Role, they have to appreciate a book that brings more options to fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons.

Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount will release on March 17, and can be pre-ordered now (even though you’re not supposed to).
