Warning: contains a preview for Wonder Girl #3!

Yara Flor – DC’s next Wonder Woman – just met her first actual villain. Wonder Girl #3 has received a new preview from DC Comics. In the preview, Yara meets what appears to be Brazil’s version of the boogeyman – an alligator with blonde hair and an interest in trapping the young warrior.

In DC’s Future State event, Yara Flor was revealed to be the new Wonder Woman, leading her own group of Amazons who live in Brazil, which is where she is from. Her current series, Wonder Girl, takes place before the potential future of Future State and explores how she came to be an Amazon warrior. She was born in Brazil, but left very early and has now returned to her homeland, where she is finding lots of trouble. This series has focused extensively on Brazil and the folklore of the country – which is continuing in the upcoming issue.

Wonder Girl #3 has the creative team of Joëlle Jones, Adriana Melo, and Jordie Bellaire. In previous issues, Yara has faced Amazon warriors from other factions, like Bana-Mighdall, and it was revealed that Cassie Sandsmark and Artemis are both trying to find her. The gods are also after her, and Eros has been sent to collect the new Wonder Woman and take her to Hera. However, even as Eros takes a shot at Yara, other enemies – including Brazil’s boogeyman (the Cuca) – have found her instead.

This preview picks up with Yara and João after their plane has crashed. The two reunite and are shown getting very close to one another as they share a couple kisses. However, their relationship may already be thrown onto the rocks with Eros around. After all, he is the god of love and he is here to deliver Yara to Hera. This soon-to-be Wonder Girl could find herself in the middle of a very messy – and dangerous – DC love triangle, especially as Eros already cut his hand on one of his own love-inducing arrows. Thankfully, a giant snake appears and chases after him, prompting Yara to run after him to help because she assumes he’s in grave danger. All of this leads to Yara facing a strange figure – an alligator in a robe with blonde hair – the Cuca of Brazilian mythology.

The Cuca is a type of cuco or cucuy – a boogeyman – who appears in the shape of a clothed alligator with hair or a wig. Like other cucuys, the Cuca’s story revolves around snatching children who misbehave – though DC likely has other plans in mind. This Cuca is very real, with an army of other mythological creatures surrounding her, ready to confront Yara. Thus far, Yara has only had to face the threat of Amazons, but now, she may have come face-to-face with her first true villain. With the legends surrounding the Cuca, it seems highly likely that Yara’s in danger. However, Eros is more of an outsider than Yara in this instance – with higher potential for bad behavior – and he could actually be the creature’s intended target. After all, Yara’s Future State mission was to safeguard the gods, so her interests don’t necessarily clash with the Cuca’s.

A boogeyman doesn’t seem like the kind of being that would be an ally, but not much is known about this area of DC’s mythological universe. The Amazons in this region have been off the map for a long time. Also present besides the Cuca are an antlered serpent (Brazilian mythology has several giant serpents – though this could be the Yacumama, Boiúna, Boitatá, or another snake entirely), what appears to be a lobisomem (Brazilian werewolf), and a mapinguari (a towering cyclops with a mouth in its stomach), all surrounding Yara. This could suggest the Cuca is just the mouthpiece of a larger group of monsters. If so, it’s possible DC’s next Wonder Woman could be in very big trouble when Wonder Girl #3 hits retailers August 31.
