It’s a little-known fact stop-motion masterpiece The Nightmare Before Christmas has a sequel, but it’s not a movie. Produced by Tim Burton and directed by Henry Selick, The Nightmare Before Christmas was released via Disney’s Touchstone Pictures label back in 1993. This beloved animation tells the tale of Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloweentown, whose attempt at hijacking Christmas has disastrous consequences and is a key title on almost every film fan’s festive viewing list.

There was talk of a movie sequel in the early 2000s with Disney wanting to ditch its stop-motion style for CGI but Tim Burton put the kibosh on that, fearing a mass-marketed “Jack visits Thanksgiving World” sequel would demean the original. Now that Disney is remaking a ton of its animated classics, the House of Mouse recently resurrected the idea of a Nightmare Before Christmas sequel or live-action remake. Whether Tim Burton will let that happen remains to be seen, but there is a Nightmare Before Christmas 2 of sorts already out there.

The Capcom video game The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge is the closest thing there is to The Nightmare Before Christmas 2 … for the time being anyway. Released on PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2004, the game was developed in consultation with Tim Burton and the film’s art director Deane Taylor. Set a year after the events of the movie, the game sees players assume the role of Jack Skellington as he battles the villainous bogeyman Oogie Boogie who is plotting to take over all of the Holidays Worlds to become their supreme leader and king.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge isn’t Jack Skellington’s only video game appearance. Jack, Halloweentown and other characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas like Oogie Boogie, Sally and Dr. Finkelstein are a regular fixture in the Square Enix-Disney mashup franchise Kingdom Hearts. The year after Oogie’s Revenge, a Game Boy Advance game was released titled The Nightmare Before Christmas: The Pumpkin King which was set before the film and detailed how Jack came to be the king of Halloweentown.

As for whether The Nightmare Before Christmas 2 will ever materialize in film form? Well, Jack’s voice Chris Sarandon (Fright Night) recently expressed enthusiasm for a sequel as did director Henry Selick, although that was a few years ago and on the condition he and Tim Burton could come up with a decent story. Obviously Disney are keen, so it seems The Nightmare Before Christmas 2 depends on Burton. Let’s just hope if the movie does go ahead, it stays faithful to the spirit of the original movie.
