For many fans of Pokémon, the games that got them into the series have been lost to time. Currently relegated to ageing cartridges, the older Pokémon titles need to be ported to a modern system like the Nintendo Switch so that fans wanting to go back and play the original games can access them more easily. Porting the older generation Pokémon games to Switch would fix the age-induced accessibility issues for these titles and remove the risk of players downloading illegitimate ports in hopes of playing through a favorite generation one more time.

Pokémon games have been coming out since 1996, starting with the original Game Boy, and have steadily released through the evolution of Nintendo handheld consoles. Because of this, Pokémon games predating the 3DS have been left behind as their consoles become obsolete or break down. While some players may have a copy of every game stored away, working consoles may no longer be accessible without a substantial cost, making playing these older titles difficult.

An issue for fans with working retro consoles, on the other hand, comes from the game cartridges themselves. Many of the older-generation games, like Ruby and Sapphire, had batteries built into their motherboards to power the saving function or to allow the internal clock to run. As the games age, many of these batteries have stopped working, wiping saves or freezing the Pokémon games in time. While it is possible to replace these batteries, doing so can be intimidating – or even risk motherboard damage – for those unfamiliar with soldering. Thus, many of these older games have become useless tokens of generations past.

Pokémon’s Pre-3DS Games Need To Be Ported To Nintendo Switch

Old Pokémon games began to appear on the 3DS in 2016, with Nintendo 3Ds ports of Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver and Crystal making their way to the system through 2018. But shortly after this began, the Switch started to push 3DS consoles off the market. While players can still access these games on the 3DS eShop, players who didn’t purchase a 3DS and went straight for the Switch have no way to access them without hunting for the older system. Even if fans find a 3DS in decent condition, they’re still limited to the oldest games in the series, since titles in the middle never made it, like Ruby, Sapphire and the Game Boy Advance Gen 1 remakes.

Instead of bringing back every version released, Game Freak could focus its efforts on porting games like Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum, as these are considered the “complete” versions of each generation. While there is rumor of a remake on the horizon for Diamond and Pearl, it would be nice for fans to have access to the original games, allowing them to delve back into the pixel graphics that may have been the start of their own personal Pokémon journeys.
