With the start of the Call of Duty League just hours away and the third season of the Overwatch League quickly approaching, it was unclear where the matches for both leagues would be broadcast for all the world to watch. Fortunately, the silence was broken just before the start of the inaugural season of the Call of Duty League when it was announced that Activision Blizzard and Google struck a deal for the two leagues to broadcast on Youtube Gaming for the 2020 season and beyond.

This is fairly new territory for Youtube Gaming as it attempts to break into the esports broadcasting market that has largely been dominated by Twitch and MLG for a while now. This is also new territory for the Overwatch League as the first two seasons were broadcast with Twitch on a two-year, $90 million deal that helped draw a fairly large audience to the league. Despite parting ways with Twitch, there is an opportunity here for the Overwatch League to continue to appeal to a more diverse range of fans than ever before. Entering a possible “make-or-break” year for the league, here’s to hoping that the move to Youtube Gaming is the right one. Only time will tell with that one.

The Call of Duty League is entering its first season and has kept many in the dark about its sponsors as well as the broadcasting deal. It isn’t a good look for the league to announce where to watch less than two hours before it officially started. Still, there is an appeal to a franchise, location-based league for competitive Call of Duty and it will be interesting to see if Google/Youtube Gaming can help it reach its potential.

This deal excludes streaming rights for China which is yet to be announced for OWL where the market is looking to explode with the homestand format in 2020. Along with broadcasting the Call of Duty League and Overwatch League, Youtube Gaming will also play host to the competitive Hearthstone scene, and more. This could prove to be a good partnership for both interests and it will be exciting to see how it plays out, not only in 2020, but well after too.
