The Platform & 9 Other Great Horror Movies With Ridiculous Plots

From the mind of Spanish director Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia, The Platform is a startling social commentary that has captivated Netflix subscribers since its release late last year. Cerebral and multifaceted, it’s plot is almost beyond description, and it’s ending will leave viewers scratching their heads.

However, it’s far from the only modern horror movie to embrace strange plot elements, and, from esoteric Lovecraftian exploits to absurd cultists and their weird rituals, here are 10 fairly recent horror movies that feature utterly ridiculous, almost incomprehensible plots.

10 The Platform

One of the strangest horror movies to release in recent months is the aforementioned Netflix title The Platform. A Spanish film rife with social commentary, The Platform takes place in a strange structure made up of a seemingly endless number of floors. Only two people can live on each floor, and, the higher the platform, the more food the occupants will be given each month.

With the occupants of higher platforms thoughtless and glutenous and the occupants of the lower ones starving and fighting, The Platform paints a stark, frighteningly realistic contrast between the haves and the have-nots.

9 Cabin In The Woods

Releasing in 2012, Cabin In The Woods was celebrated as a masterclass in parody. Taking clicheéd slasher movie tropes and turning them completely upside down, Cabin In The Woods winks and nods as it dishes out one of the most laugh-out-loud ridiculous horror movie plots of all time.

Government agencies the world over are tasked with the ritualistic slaughter of innocents in order to appease ancient gods who threaten to reawaken should these rituals not come to fruition. One of the best horror comedies of all time, it’s a must-watch for just about anyone.

8 It Follows

It Follows is a masterclass of low-budget horror filmmaking and offers up one of the most terrifying—albeit ridiculous—premises of any movie in recent history.

An unknowable, unstoppable shapeshifting entity stalks and kills its victims, but a targeted person can pass on their next-victim status to whomever they have sex with. Eventually, a group of friends learns of what’s going on and ban together to eliminate the horror. However, the ending does little to assuage the fears of those worried that they may be victims of a stalker.

7 Us

The Platform & 9 Other Great Horror Movies With Ridiculous Plots

The followup to Jordan Peele’s groundbreaking 2017 horror hit Get Out, Us features a plot so utterly bizarre that it kept some moviegoers from enjoying the movie in the first place.

At some point, an unknown government agency endeavored to clone everyone in the United States, but, when the project was abandoned, the clones were held in massive underground chambers. These clones plot to overthrow the humans on the surface and enact their vengeance all in one night. It’s tough to follow and filled with twists, making an already out-there plot seems all the more convoluted.

6 Hereditary

Bizarre occultism and twisted cults should be nothing new to avid horror movie fans, but Hereditary presents its plot in such a confusing way that it’s tough to understand what’s going on, even during repeat viewings.

Essentially, the matriarch of a family passes away, thus enacting a long-prepared plot to summon a demon and have it possess the body of the woman’s grandson. Full of paranoia, terror, and surprise decapitations, Hereditary is one of the weirdest horror movies to release in quite some time.

5 Midsommar

The Platform & 9 Other Great Horror Movies With Ridiculous Plots

One of the most relentlessly unnerving horror films of all time, Midsommar’s scares aren’t introduced through conventional means, thus making them all the more disturbing.

A troupe of friends embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Sweden to experience a community’s solstice festival. However, things aren’t what they seem, and the plot thickens as characters begin to disappear amid a backdrop of awful ceremonies and ritualistic suicides. The ending is odd and ambiguous, and Midsommar does little to clue the viewers in on what the hell just happened.

4 Mandy

Nicholas Cage often gets a lot of flack, particularly when it comes to his horror movie roles—The Wicker Man, anyone? However, 2018’s Mandy is a strange, absurd beast that continually compliments Cage’s strengths as an off-the-wall actor.

After a cult kidnaps and murders his wife, Cage’s character is out for revenge in a neon and blood-soaked phantasmagoria only rivaled in insanity by low-budget body horror titles from the decade to which it pays homage.

3 The Endless

2017’s The Endless is yet another Lovecraftian nightmare that seeks to drive viewers insane and keep them up at night pondering the unanswered questions to the universe. After a pair of brothers return to a Heaven’s Gate-esque cult with which they grew up, things quickly spiral into madness, and the ending will have viewers desperate to rewatch for a chance to piece together the not-quite-obscure-but-not-quite-forthcoming story.

2 Split

An M. Night Shyamalan story featuring all of the strange twists and turns one would expect from the director, Split tells the tale of a man suffering from multiple personality disorder. However, rather than attempting to mitigate his multiple personas, he, along with the help of his therapist, attempts to embrace them.

However, a sinister plot is brewing, as the man has kidnapped a group of young women and plans on eating them to fuel his new beastly persona. Incidentally, this was a surprise sequel to Shyamalan’s 2000 movie Unbreakable, and it was further iterated upon in 2019’s Glass.

1 The Mist

One of the most controversial Lovecraftian films of all time, The Mist tells the tale of a group of strangers stranded in a convenience store who must do their best to survive while keeping a squall of unspeakable entities at bay beyond the confines of the store.

Though it’s infamous for its insanely bleak ending, The Mist merely touches on its monsters-from-beyond-space-and-time premise. Little is explained to the viewer, and the plot seems all the more insane given how little is known about what these creatures are or how exactly they came to Earth.
