The Pokémon Anime Is Going To Galar For A Sword & Shield Arc

The Pokémon anime will briefly be returning to its original format, as the upcoming story arc will focus on the storyline from Pokémon Sword & Shield.

The current season of the Pokémon anime (referred to as Pokémon Journeys: The Series outside of Japan) is using a brand new format, where Ash travels to every region in the franchise, as he’s taking part in the World Coronation Series. Ash is joined by a boy named Goh, who is trying to catch every Pokémon in the world.

The previous seasons of the Pokémon anime followed the storylines from the games and the latest series about to do the same. According to Famitsu, the four episodes of the Pokémon anime that will run throughout October in Japan will follow the storyline from Pokémon Sword & Shield.

The Sword & Shield story arc will involve giant Pokémon going on a rampage in the Galar region, which prompts Ash to team up with Leon to try and stop them. A secret organization is attempting to awaken an ancient Pokémon that struck the Galar region long ago, which is almost certainly Eternatus. In order to save the Galar region, Zacian and Zamazenta awaken from their long slumber and work together to take down Eternatus.

It also seems that the Sword & Shield story arc is going to promote the upcoming Crown Tundra DLC for the video games, as the latest poster for the anime shows Mewtwo, Mew, Suicune, and Zapdos. The Crown Tundra will be bringing back Legendary Pokémon from the earlier entries in the series, so it makes sense that more of them would appear in the Sword & Shield arc.

The changes to the Pokémon format have been well-received among fans around the world, even if it seems that Ash is being retired as the protagonist of the series. A return to the series equals region format would have thrown away this goodwill, but a short journey to the Galar region to deal with the storyline from the games is fine and is a great way to introduce more of the big-name characters/Pokémon from Sword & Shield.
