The Pokemon Company has reuploaded videos covering Pokemon Unite on its official YouTube channel. The initial announcement for the MOBA game was not received well by fans, with the video of the announcement trailer getting over a hundred thousand dislikes in a day. The reveal for the title became the most disliked video in Nintendo’s history, beating both the announcement for Metroid Prime: Federation Force and the Nintendo Treehouse video for Pokemon Sword & Shield, where it was announced that not all Pokemon would be returning to Sword & Shield.

The outrage directed towards Pokemon Unite was due to a variety of reasons. First, The Pokemon Company had built up hype for this announcement for a week prior to the reveal in its last ‘Pokemon Presents’ showcase, where the firm announced games like a sequel to the beloved Pokemon Snap. Fans speculated that this would lead to an announcement of remakes of the generation four games Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, but more than that, the announcement made clear that the game was “free to start,” as if to say the game would have microtransactions. Yet, there were no specifications on what those microtransactions would be. Combine that with the fact that the game’s developer, Tencent, is a controversial company with a history of developing games with microtransactions and you have a recipe for a salty reception.

Now, the videos that have garnered thousands of dislikes on YouTube have been privatized and reuploaded to The Pokemon Company’s YouTube channel. Nintendo Life’s report on this news points out that the reasoning for this is due to an inaccuracy in the initial trailer with the Nintendo Switch being mirrored. The source for this comes from the Singapore version of the Pokemon Presents for that day on YouTube. “Due to inaccuracy in the footage, we corrected the video and reuploaded it.”

However, fans believe that this reason is merely a cover for The Pokemon Company to keep a presentable image of its properties, as also stated in the report from Nintendo Life. Several comments on the report and the reuploads show fans delivering harsh criticisms to The Pokemon Company for trying to cover up the negative reception to the announcement. The reuploads also didn’t stop dislikes from flooding in, with the American version of the announcement amassing over 4,000 dislikes at the time of writing.

Whether or not the reason stated for these reuploads are true or not, given the previous reception to the game’s announcement, it’s not a good look for The Pokemon Company. As the comments and ratings demonstrate, reuploading these videos does nothing to stop the controversy that the game has garnered, whether that was the intention or not. The bitterness from Pokemon Unite will remain constant, and if the firm was indeed trying to sweep it under the rug, that plan harshly backfired on them.
