The Pokemon Company Plans to Sue Sword and Shield Leakers

When Pokemon Sword and Shield were still in the promoting and advertising process, mysterious leakers took it upon themselves to show off key aspects of the games that The Pokemon Company either wasn’t ready to reveal or didn’t want to be revealed at all. The information that leaked triggered controversies among the Pokemon fandom and eventually led to a rallying call for a boycott.

While this boycott failed and the games managed to pull off the most successful launch of all time in regards to Pokemon, The Pokemon Company isn’t happy with the individuals that unofficially leaked details for the games (like Gigantamax forms) in the first place and have opted to go after them with lawsuits.

According to Forbes, Pokemon Company International looks to specifically target leakers that revealed images of then-unforeseen Pokemon and in-game mechanics to Discord and 4Chan back in early November. The individuals posted 18 pictures directly from the Sword and Shield strategy guide to these sites, and it didn’t take long for the images to go viral. In fact, in total, The Pokemon Company found its images distributed to over 300 different webpages following the initial leak. The company now plans on subpoenaing Discord and 4chan to force the two to give up details on some of the users behind the leaks.

Through its lawyers, The Pokemon Company claims that it suffered “irreparable injury.” It states that the antics of these leakers led to “reducing the fan interest and engagement The Pokemon Company and its partners generate by keeping key elements of the games’ secret,” and that this entitles the company to yet-undecided compensation for damages dealt. So far, The Pokemon Company has located at least four individuals of interest on Discord. It believes these individuals to be the ones that provided the images for the leaks, and it will use the aforementioned subpoenas to try and figure out the real names behind their Discord user IDs.

This isn’t the first time a company sued an individual for leaking information. Epic Games sued one of its Fornite testers just last month for leaking details about its then-upcoming Chapter 2 content. With that in mind, The Pokemon Company will likely succeed in doing the same. While Pokemon Sword and Shield may have outdone all of its predecessors at launch, one can always argue that the games could have made more money should the leaks not have happened at all.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now for the Nintendo Switch.
