Pokemon Trading Card Game players are getting a new expansion come March 19, 2021, with the upcoming Sword and Shield Battle Styles. While new expansions are to always be expected, this upcoming one will be introducing a brand new mechanic to the classic trading card game.

The new Pokemon TCG set’s main appeal is the Battle Styles that also make up the set’s name. These Battle Styles change up how players make their Pokemon battle with the cards included in the new booster packs. More of these Battle Styles may even appear in future sets after the Sword and Shield Battle Styles set is released.

With the reveal trailer, two of these Battle Styles have been revealed. These are the Single Strike Style and the Rapid Strike Style, with each card having one specific Battle Style for the Pokemon on it to use.

The Single Strike Style allows Pokemon to deal powerful single attacks. Some of these are even capable of performing a one-hit KO on certain Pokemon. In the reveal trailer, it shows that Houndoom, Urshifu, Emboar, Tyranitar, and VMax Urshifu will have cards with this ability.

Meanwhile, the Rapid Strike Style allows players to deal strategic hits against their opponents at rapid speeds. How these will play out will be better seen after the set’s proper release. Pokemon that have been seen with this style include Octillery, Empoleon, Mienshao, Urshifu, and VMax Urshifu.

There will, of course, be many more Pokemon cards that players will have the chance to find in the Sword and Shield Battle Styles booster packs after they drop in 2021. Due to the trailer featuring all of the Pokemon previously mentioned fighting the legendary Pokemon Eteratus, there’s a possibility for players to see the Pokemon with one of these new Battle Styles at some point in the future, though that remains unconfirmed.

While it may take some time for this new set to come, it is also a reminder that 2020 is almost over, with plenty of new content from both physical and digital games to look forward to. Once again, this new expansion of the Pokemon Trading Card game will be released officially on March 19, 2021. With the recent influx of Pokemon card fans due to the recent trend of Pokemon card unboxing on YouTube, some players might need to act fast in order to snatch these cards up.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game’s Sword and Shield Battle Styles expansion launches on March 19, 2021.
