Over the course of the past few days, several game developers and publishers have been donating to humanitarian causes across the globe in an effort to help families displaced by Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Perhaps the biggest of these is The Pokemon Company, which has recently pledged an “immediate donation” of $200,000 to GlobalGiving, a non-profit organization that collects donations to be distributed to grassroots charities.
In a statement posted on the company’s official Twitter account, The Pokemon Company explains that GlobalGiving will “efficiently direct the funds to community-led organizations supporting families and children affected by the crisis.” The fact that this is an “immediate” donation also opens the possibility of more donations from The Pokemon Company in the future if the situation in Ukraine continues to escalate.
The Pokemon Company has now joined other developers such as CD Projekt Red and 11 Bit Studios in donating considerable sums of money towards helping families in need in Ukraine. CD Projekt Red recently donated $240,000 and halted all game sales in Russia and Belarus, while 11 Bit Studios has managed to raise over half a million pounds after announcing it would be donating all profits made by This War of Mine for a week.
It’s nice to see The Pokemon Company acknowledging the crisis after a week of pretty much radio silence. Promotion of the most recent Pokemon Presents showcase was apparently scaled down after news of the invasion broke, with folks at the company not wanting to come across as insensitive. In fact, there were even talks of delaying the presentation before it aired, although pre-scheduled announcements meant that it couldn’t be postponed.
With the war in Ukraine escalating on an almost daily basis, we may see bigger game companies take action, at least that’s what Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov wants to happen. Yesterday, Fedorov asked both PlayStation and Xbox to “block all Russian and Belorussian accounts,” and urged both to “leave the Russian market.” CD Projekt Red followed suit, but it’s unknown whether PlayStation or Xbox will give in to Fedorov’s request.
