A new promotional Nintendo Switch Lite console will release just before Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl this November, spotlighting the game’s Legendary Pokémon in silver and gold on the back of the portable console. While the special promotional model has a sleek design that harkens back to the Nintendo DS Lite’s Diamond and Pearl edition console, the choice to use the Switch Lite over other models may be disappointing. This is especially true for those who may be planning to purchase the OLED Nintendo Switch this October.
The Dialga and Palkia edition of the Nintendo Switch Lite will release on November 5, 2021, just weeks before Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl on November 19, and roughly a month after the planned release date for the OLED Switch model on October 8. The Switch Lite, which is meant to be like Nintendo’s handheld consoles of the past, omits the docking station mode enabling television play and also lacks detachable Joy-Con controllers. While it is a good fit for those wanting a smaller device, limiting the special Pokémon edition won’t be ideal for those who prefer to utilize the standard Switch’s key features.
While Nintendo has not implemented too many changes to the original Switch model, the upcoming OLED Nintendo Switch has a few specific features that make it more appealing than the Switch Lite. The most notable is the 7″ OLED display meant to provide bright, crisp visuals during gameplay. The OLED model also offers a wider kickstand and 64 GB internal storage compared to the 32 GB of the original model. For those who have had their Switch consoles for years, the minor upgrades and a chance to replace a potentially worn-out system, will likely make the OLED model worth investing in.

Currently, there aren’t plans for a Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl edition of the OLED Switch consoles. Because of this, those who hope to try out the OLED Switch’s new features, but want to pick up the limited edition Pokémon promotional console, will either have to choose one and miss out on the special features of the other or sink money for both consoles. The OLED Switch is listed on Nintendo’s website for 349.99 USD, while the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Switch Lite will be 199.99 USD. Purchasing both consoles when the OLED model outperforms the Lite would likely be a frustrating waste of money for fans of both the Nintendo Switch and the Pokémon series.
There is also a chance that both Nintendo Switch models will experience the same shortages seen by Microsoft and Sony last fall, after the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S releases. Both consoles were nearly impossible to find for months, and remain highly sought after almost a year after release. These shortages, caused by a lack of required parts and scalpers taking advantage of online-only purchasing, created long waits for those eager to buy the new consoles. While there will hopefully be plenty of both the Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Nintendo Switch Lite and OLED Nintendo Switch consoles, fans may want to consider preordering to prevent month-long waits in the instance of similar shortages.
