The Pokemon War This BloodSoaked Theory Will Break Your Heart in Half

Although the world of Pokemon seems happy, cute and mostly idealized (especially in the anime), the games have long hinted the Pokemon world isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. One important hint back in the Generation 1 games, Pokemon Red, Blue, Green (Japan) and Yellow, is that a Pokemon war might have occurred shortly before our time. That’s right — the Pokemon War is a canon event that happened in the Pokemon universe. What happened during this infamous war? And what was its impact to the Pokemon world?

Lieutenant Surge: War Hero?

The Pokemon War This BloodSoaked Theory Will Break Your Heart in Half

The only passing mention of this event is from gym leader Lieutenant Surge. In both the games and the anime, defeating Surge was no piece of cake. Once he’s finally beaten in the game, however, Surge tells the player an odd parting statement: “Hey, kid! What do you think you’re doing here? You won’t live long in combat! That’s for sure! I tell you kid, electric POKÉMON saved me during the war! They zapped my enemies into paralysis! The same as I’ll do to you!”

So we know that Surge fought in combat, and that his electric Pokemon saved him during the war. The NPCs in the gym also give the player some context concerning the war, and claim that Surge is an American soldier who used to be a pilot during the war. His time in the army has made him a bit paranoid, and that’s why he’s set up traps all throughout the gym.

Considering how this context clearly indicates some form of PTSD, it’s interesting to note how dark the Pokemon universe can get when scratched beyond the surface. Also, Surge being American indicates that Pokemon takes place on some version of our Earth, perhaps in the far future. As to why the city names aren’t names from our world, perhaps it’s because the story is set in a far away future where the continents and countries are the same, but the cities have been renamed? That, or the Pokemon world is an alternate Universe similar to our own, but where existence of Pokemon caused a butterfly effect resulting in multiple changes, like different city names.

Gen 1: A Post-War Universe..?

Fans have theorized that the reason that there are barely any adults in Gen 1 and that the player has no dad (combined to the rival not having parents) is that the player comes from the first generation to live at peace after the war. That would also explain why the few adults encountered are either women, elderly or have jobs such as gym leaders or crime lords. The lack of entertainment facilities such as theaters would also be a direct result of this war. Another element to this theory is the fact that there are almost only gyms and hospitals (Pokemon Centers) in Generation 1. If that were true, our mother seeing us as the “man of the house” and letting us roam around freely would make perfect sense.

Oak giving us the Pokedex to fill out would also completely work with this theory. After the war, most of the data on Pokemon would have been lost, and since there aren’t enough adults wandering around, Oak requires the services of young children to go and gather that information for him.

The fact that the rival’s parents are also completely absent would be a result of him being a war orphan. If this theory and the Raticate dying theory are both true, then this would basically turn the player into a heartless monster, who killed their poor rival’s Pokemon friend. Gen 1 might be a whole lot darker than it first looks.
