One of the major complaints, when it came to Pokémon X, is that many of the fights felt inconsequential. With the shared XP between Pokémon, there was no issue in having the right Pokémon for the job when dealing with opponents, even those as high up as the Elite Four. The group that got hit the worst were the Gym Leaders.

Many of them felt like cakewalks, especially those that came later in the game. Considering they are meant to be some of the benchmark trainers, it’s a bit disappointing. At least a few of them do get to live up to their name.

8 Ramos Suffers From Shared XP

Despite being the fourth gym leader faced in the game, he’s laughably easy as the shared XP makes strategic thinking no longer a thing. You don’t have to worry about if you have the right Pokémon to the proper level, making his grass-type Pokémon a cinch to walk right through. Even without the shared XP, his Pokémon were not all that strong. The only minor issue may have been Weepingbell’s poisons, but that’s easy enough to move past.

7 Olympia Has A Great Look That Is Squandered On A Lackluster Battle

The Pokémon X Gym Leaders Ranked By Difficulty

Of all the Gym Leaders you run into during Pokémon X, Olympia is easily one of the most unique. Not only is her look eye-catching, from the hair to the celestial look of her cape, she also speaks in haikus at the player. Unfortunately, as memorable as she is, it isn’t due to her fight. As with Ramos, much of her strength is negated by the shared XP, making it simple to come up with a team that can deal with the psychic heavy team. Luckily the anime did give her a boost in importance thanks to her ability to foresee the future.

6 Wulfric Only Has One Multi Type Pokemon

As the final Gym Leader you’re meant to face, it’d be expected that Wulfric would provide a steady challenge to the player. That simply isn’t the case. Unlike his fellow Gym Leaders, who have two or more multi-types, Wulfric only has Abomasnow.

His other two Pokémon are strictly ice, making him easy to counter. With multiple affinities being a thing for a while now, it’s disappointing having a character with such high-level Pokémon be so lackluster.

5 Grant’s Amaura Could Be A Tough Out If You Weren’t Ready For Them

The Pokémon X Gym Leaders Ranked By Difficulty

As only the second Gym Leader on the list, he’s higher than expected, and a big reason is he happened before shared XP became as overpowering as it was later in the game. While he only had two Pokémon, they both presented some problems at the lower levels. His Tyrunt’s bite posed a few issues, and his Amaura could be a handful if you weren’t prepared for them. Their T-wave and Refrigerate Takedowns could be equally bothersome.

4 Viola Can Be Awful For People Who Chose Chespin

The Pokémon X Gym Leaders Ranked By Difficulty

As the first Gym Leader in the whole game, she’s harder than she ought to be, and it has little to do with her difficulty as a trainer. She’s a perfect starter trainer who only possesses two Pokemon, neither of which are all that difficult. What makes her tougher than other Gym Leaders is the fact her Pokémon can counter Chespin pretty hard. If he isn’t evolved by the time she’s fought, she can be a tough one to deal with. However, once he is evolved, she’s a piece of cake.

3 Korrina’s Hawlucha Can KO You If You Aren’t Prepared For It

The Pokémon X Gym Leaders Ranked By Difficulty

Korrina has an interesting look given that she’s riding around on rollerblades and looking like a carhop at a Sonic. There’s more to her than that as you end up fighting her twice, once when she has two Lucario’s and another time when she has a dreaded Hawlucha.

The rest of her team is ok, but the Hawlucha can jack up your team if you aren’t ready for them. It’s strong enough to outright Ko someone if at an advantage via level or type.

2 Clemont’s Magneton’s Thunderbolt Can Put Out Some Hurt

The Pokémon X Gym Leaders Ranked By Difficulty

Clemont is about the midpoint when it comes to Gym Leaders and certainly doesn’t have the look of someone who could give you a heated battle, but that’s exactly what he can do. His Emolga and Heliolisk provide pitfalls when you come up against them, but it’s his Magneton that can push out the most damage and is the biggest danger. Its thunderbolts can shred through people and help make the fight interesting once you go against him.

1 Valerie Possessed Fairy Pokemon

By this point, Fairy Pokémon were still a new addition, and one that players still had to feel out a bit. As such, Valarie presented an interesting challenge, easily the most difficult of all the gym trainers in the game. Once the player got a handle on the fairy types, she was still difficult due to how she could extend a fight with Mr. Mime’s barriers. She would draw you into a war of attrition if you weren’t careful, a battle that Valerie was more than capable of winning.
