She’s a complicated character who won’t be winning any Mother of the Year awards anytime soon, but here’s Ray’s mother Isabella from The Promised Neverland explained. Created by Kaiu Shirai, The Promised Neverland is a dark fantasy manga adaptation by Japanese studio CloverWorks. It’s set in the year 2045 at an orphanage named Grace Field House and follows a trio of orphans – Emma, Norman and Ray – after they discover they’re not waiting to be adopted but are actually being harvested as food for demons.

Isabella is the caretaker of Grace Field House and is referred to as “Mama” by her young charges. It’s fair to say Isabella is a bag of contradictions; while she appears loving and affectionate to the orphanage’s children, she also proves to be cunning and violent and seems to display indifference towards their gruesome fates. When Emma and Norman attempt to escape Grace Field House, for example, Isabella broke Emma’s leg to foil their plans.

However, The Promised Neverland soon revealed that Isabella had a tragic backstory that explained parts of her conflicting personality. It turns out Isabella was once a Grace Field House orphan herself and had a good friend named Leslie who was shipped off to be eaten. Losing her best friend devastated the once happy-go-lucky Isabella, as did finding out the truth about the orphanage/food farm. She was offered the opportunity to become an orphanage Mama and took it, hoping to give her future charges a loving upbringing but also securing her own survival in the process.

Isabella’s sad backstory doesn’t end there either. Aged 19 she became pregnant by artificial insemination (something The Promised Neverland implies happens to all Mamas) and was forced to give up the child. She eventually realized that child was none other than Ray, and that she’d been unknowingly raising her own biological son as demon livestock. Although Isabella initially treated Ray with contempt, she underwent a redemption arc as The Promised Neverland progressed that proved she wasn’t quite the cold-hearted antagonist she came across as.

When Emma, Ray and several other orphans managed to successfully escape Grace Field House, Isabella accepted her defeat and wished them well, even going so far as to cover up their method of escape to make them harder to find. Later in the show, when the escapees were forced to return to Grace Field House to rescue their fellow orphans, Isabella rebelled against her superior Peter Ratri to save the children. While Isabella ultimately meets different fates in The Promised Neverland manga and its anime series, she nevertheless comes good in the end.
