The world was finally given a glimpse of the PlayStation 5 during the reveal event that happened a few days ago. Yet while it offered an exciting glimpse at Sony’s next system, it didn’t offer many reasons to pick one up on launch day.

Sony showed off some incredible titles during the reveal, like Gran Turismo 7, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Project Athia, Stray, Demon’s Souls, Resident Evil: Village, and Horizon Forbidden West. The problem with these announcements is that they were for games that are meant to be released in 2021, 2022, or have no release date at all.

The other main issue with the PlayStation 5 launch line-up is the lack of exclusives. Here is the list of games that are currently slated for the PS5 at launch (courtesy of IGN) and we can see how many systems they will be available on.

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – Is also coming to Google Stadia, PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
  • Astro’s Playroom – Is a PS5 exclusive and will be pre-loaded into every system.
  • Bugsnax – Is coming to PS4 and PC through EGS.
  • Chivalry 2 – Is coming to PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
  • Death Loop – Is coming to PC and Xbox One.
  • Dirt 5 – Is coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
  • Fortnite – Is available on pretty much everything.
  • Godfall – Is coming to PC.
  • Gods and Monsters – Is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Google Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
  • Jett: The Far Shore – Is coming to PS4 and PC.
  • Madden NFL 21 – Is coming to pretty much everything except Switch.
  • NBA 2K21 – Same as above.
  • Observer – Was released in 2017 and is available on pretty much everything.
  • Oddworld Soulstorm – Is coming to PC and PS4.
  • Outriders – Is coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
  • Quantum Error – Is coming to Ps4.
  • Redo! Enhanced Edition – Is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales – Will be a PS5 exclusive.
  • Ultimate Fishing Simulator 2 – Is available on PC.
  • Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 – Is coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
  • Watch Dogs: Legion – Is coming to Google Stadia, PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
  • WRC 9 – Is coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

This leaves a grand total of two PS5 exclusives that have been announced for launch – Astro’s Playroom and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The fact that Astro’s Playroom is a free game that is bundled with every PS5 suggests that it will be a short game that is designed to show off the features of the system. Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a game that is worth getting excited over, or it would have been if not for the mixed messages regarding the title that have come out since its announcement. There is currently confusion as to whether Miles Morales is a sequel, an expansion of the original game, or a stand-alone title in the vein of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Godfall is close to being exclusive, as it might be too taxing to run on many PCs, but the footage that was shown during the PS5 reveal event wasn’t exactly scintillating, nor was it enough to stand out among the other announcements made on the show.

Sony also has to deal with the fact that it isn’t the first rodeo for many gamers when it comes to a new console generation. The majority of adult gamers have been present for other console launches in the past, and it’s common knowledge that buying a system at launch is a bad idea. Most gamers know that it’s smarter to wait a year to buy a system, as there will likely be a price cut at some point or a bundle with a highly-anticipated game. Waiting a year also gives Sony a chance to implement any features that could be missing at launch.

Game companies need to offer consumers a compelling reason for customers to buy a system at launch. Nintendo managed to do that with the Switch due to its unique hybrid handheld/home console gimmick, and the fact that it launched alongside the highly-anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A marginal increase in graphical quality and faster load times aren’t gonna cut it on their own, especially as the games that make the most of those elements won’t be available for another year or two.

There are still plenty of reasons to be excited about the PlayStation 5 and Sony still has six months worth of reveals to change my mind. Out of the two next-gen systems, I’m far more excited about the PlayStation 5 than the Xbox Series X, but the lackluster launch line-up and the lack of information about the price mean that Sony’s next system won’t be taking up a spot below the Christmas tree this year. With that being said, I’d love for Sony to change my mind and make me excited enough about the system t0 want to seek it out on launch day.
