Many iconic horror franchises are known for their masks, whether they be stretched out William Shatner masks (Halloween), hockey masks (Friday the 13th), or masks stitched together from skin (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). While this is not always the case in every horror film, masks often provide a strong image for franchises and their antagonists.

One of the most popular modern horror franchises, The Purge has made its mark due to its creepy costumes and disturbing visuals. Stretching four movies and a TV show, it is a franchise filled with creative and scary masks that are guaranteed to stay with viewers long after the credits rolls.

10 The Face Of God Mask

Appearing in both The Purge: Anarchy and the TV show, this mask first shows up when Liz and Shane are suddenly attacked as they try to get into their car near the start of the Purge. The mask causes one of the biggest jump scares in the movie at that point, as Liz and Shane are intimidated by the mask wearer’s sinister stoicism, played by Get Out’s Lakeith Stanfield.

While it would’ve still been creepy with only its emotionless expression and pitch black eyes, what really makes this mask creepy is the inclusion of the word “God” on the forehead. It shows that the wearer thinks he is all-powerful and unstoppable.

9 The Blackface Mask

One of the most politically-charged horror film franchises in recent years, The Purge has many instances of spooky social commentary, such as when some Purge participants wear Ku Klux Klan robes. However, one of the most striking moments of commentary comes when viewers are first introduced to the “blackface” masks in The Purge: Election Year.

While they are only in the movie for a brief moment, the exaggerated features of the mask and the racial connotations behind them ensure that they are one of the movie’s most memorable visuals.

8 The Horned Mask

Appearing during the party sequence in The First Purge, this mask is seen by Isaiah as he tries to make his way through the party. Skeletor, the main villain of the film, soon appears at the party and begins to kill people before Isaiah can barely escape.

Influenced by the red ocular implants used by the government to spy on the night’s activities, this mask has a singularly sinister and devilish look. Though it is only shown briefly, this mask has become one of the franchise’s most popular.

7 The Cross Mask

Appearing in The Purge: Anarchy and plastered across a lot of its marketing, this mask is different from many of the other masks in this franchise. Instead of being made of plastic or other materials, this is actually face paint worn by one of the participants of the Purge.

Worn by a member of The Bikers, this mask is effective due to its homemade nature. While some of the series’ masks look clean and almost manufactured, this mask feels personal, as if the Purger puts more effort into the activities than most.

6 Uncle Sam

The Purge The 10 Scariest Masks Ranked

Appearing in the series’ third film The Purge: Election Year, this mask is worn by “Uncle Sam,” a leader of a group of Russians that have travelled to the US in order to participate in the annual Purge. Dressed up as various American figures, they oppose the idea of ending the Purge.

A sinister take on an American icon, the mask is disturbing both for its looks as well as its messaging. The sinister smile and facial hair give it a menacing feeling, while the commentary on American violence makes it more than just visually striking.

5 Kiss Me

This mask is worn by Kimmy, one of the main antagonists of Election Year. After she attacks Joe in his store due to a previous disagreement, he and the others struggle to fend her off before she is killed by Laney.

Often bathed in red light, the masks half-closed eyes and shark-like teeth give it a very disturbing and creepy look. Adding onto this, the words “Kiss Me” scribbled around the top of the mask bring attention to the creepy teeth.

4 Smiling Masks

These masks are worn by the main antagonists of the first Purge film, Polite Leader and his gang. When they are first seen through the security camera placed at the front door of the Sandins’ house, these masks parallel the fake-cheery demeanor that Polite Leader puts on.

The oversized masks are memorable due to their exaggerated and sinister smiles as well as their dark eyes. Additionally these are the first masks shown in detail in the film, ensuring that audiences are caught off-guard by their level of creepiness.

3 American Flag Skull Mask

The Purge The 10 Scariest Masks Ranked

Worn by a Purger in Election Year, this is another one of the franchise’s more political masks. Fitting with many of the other politically-minded masks in the film, this one depicts a skull with the American flag painted over it.

Similar to the Uncle Sam mask, this one works on two different levels. Visually, the detailed skull and blood-like American flag is disturbing, but the commentary on America’s issues with violence helps make this mask stand out.

2 The Sack Mask

The Purge The 10 Scariest Masks Ranked

The Sack Mask is worn by an unknown Purger in The First Purge who attacks our protagonists. Shoddily made, the mask is a sack with holes in it, with real human teeth lining the mouth.

Looking similar to Leatherface, another horror icon, this mask is effective due to its simplicity. With just a few holes ripped into a sack, this mask shows how demented the wearer seems to be – as do the disturbing human teeth lining the mouth area.

1 Lady Liberty

Another political mask from Election Year – and one that was all over the marketing – is the “Lady Liberty” mask, worn by another member of Uncle Sam’s group. Resembling the rest of the group, this mask depicts a bloodied version of the Statue of Liberty.

While this one does have the same combination of visual creepiness and deeper political meaning, what really makes it really stand out is the use of LED lights. Thanks to its inventive and memorable design, there have been many Halloween masks since the film’s release that have taken inspiration from this mask.
