Moe Szyslak is a complex character. On the one hand, he is shown to be one of the most despicable characters in The Simpsons: he threatens, harasses and insults non-stop, seeming to only really show interest in self-preservation and selfishness while angrily keeping his bar afloat. On the other, he is depicted as suicidal, unsuccessful, depressed, de-motivated and generally self-depreciative. There’s a lot to unpack there.

Of course, even the biggest fan of everyone’s favorite ‘ugly, pug ugly, fugly, pug fugly but never ugly ugly’ bartender doesn’t know everything there is to know about him. We’ve put together a list of ten facts you might have never picked up on.

10 He Appeared In The Very First Episode

The very first episode of full-length Simpsons came out in 1989 and was a Christmas special called ‘Simpsons Roasting On An Open Fire’. It wasn’t their best name, nor their best episode, and the show hadn’t really found its feet in terms of humor, writing, animation or voice acting. However, he was there, as moody as ever, in his bar in that first episode. This is an honor held by very few characters.

9 His Christmas Tradition Is A Suicide Attempt

Things take a bit of a dark turn here. Most families have their own Christmas traditions built on things like the time at which they open their presents or their Christmas Eve activities. Moe’s lonely Christmas plans aren’t as jolly.

In most Christmas episodes of the show, he gives it his best shot. Whether it’s cooking his head in the oven or landing in a hot-air balloon after jumping from a plane, it never seems to work. Phew.

8 Probably Because His Friends’ Description Of Him Is Pretty Horrific

While Moe’s over-the-top depiction of depression is both amusing and quite upsetting, it does seem to make a lot of sense. He has had a life full of failure and disappointment, while even his best friends can’t help but insult him time and time again. One of the most distressing assessments of the aspects of his appearance was a joint effort from Carl, Lenny and Homer: cauliflower ear, lizard lips, little rat eyes, caveman brow, fish snout.

7 He Moved To Springfield From The Netherlands

Backstory isn’t always The Simpsons’ strong suit. When a show has existed for over thirty years and not a single character has aged in that time, you end up with a lot of overlapping content that doesn’t quite add up. We’ve seen Moe’s past depicted many times (he seems to be consistently in Springfield) but he has also confirmed that he moved to the town from the Netherlands. Maybe he was a baby at the time?

6 But His Background Is Complex

As suggested above, things don’t quite add up in the history of Moe. While he mentioned his own Dutch heritage, it has also been suggested that he was born in Indiana. At the same time, his name is Polish, his accent is clearly that of a New Yorker, yet it has been heavily implied that he is Italian and used to have a strong Italian accent. Some more leftfield backgrounds include the fact that he was the result of a voodoo curse, and that his father was a Yeti.

5 He Seems To Have Many Names

The name we always hear Moe referred to is, of course, Moe. It’s what it says on his bar and Kid Moe was the final name he undertook in his boxing career.

However, he has also been referred to as both Morris and Moammar in the show; we’re not sure which one we prefer.

4 His Tavern Has Had Many Alternate Faces

The location in which we see Moe most frequently is his beloved bar, Moe’s Tavern. With Barney’s bar tab at $14 billion, we don’t know how he stays afloat, but he often manages it with style. He has turned the bar into Uncle Moe’s Family Feedbag, Flaming Moe’s and, of course, M. The bar has also hosted Russian Roulette, a casino and once became a speakeasy.

3 He Has Been Prank Called By Stewie Griffin

Crossovers between The Simpsons and the various shows it influenced (Family Guy and South Park for example) are often requested without much hope for it actually happening. However, ‘The Simpsons Guy’ changed that fact back in 2014, with a 45-minute-long Family Guy episode set in Springfield. In that episode, Moe gets a rather brutal prank call from Stewie Griffin: “Hello Moe, your sister’s being raped”.

2 He Has Had A Lot Of Non-Canonical Appearances

Like many characters from The Simpsons, Moe has appeared in many episodes centered on non-canonical storylines.

For example, he was the central character in ‘The Love-Matic Grandpa’, and became the main antagonist in a Treehouse Of Horror parody of Sweeny Todd.

1 He Had Real-Life Inspirations

Despite Moe’s character being such a strange entity that couldn’t possibly reflect a real person, he has a lot of real-world influences. His prank calls were based on Louis Deutsch, a bar owner, while comedian Rich Hall provided influence on his appearance and certain personality aspects.
