Few fans know it, but 2007’s long-awaited The Simpsons Movie has a secret connection to another adult animated blockbuster: Sausage Party, 2016’s zany and obscene Seth Rogen vehicle. Released in 2007, The Simpsons Movie was the result of decades of work from the creators of TV’s beloved animated sitcom. Originally intended to be the story of Kamp Krusty, the movie was a critical and financial success despite the long road that Springfield’s favorite family took to the big screen.

Among the countless rewrites and different cuts that The Simpsons Movie went through, the big-screen adventure inevitably had to sacrifice a few celebrity cameos in its lengthy production process. The fact that the movie was the cinematic debut of a series as iconic as The Simpsons meant that even the names which ended up on the cutting room floor were famous, including American History X actor Edward Norton. And that is where the movie’s connection to Sausage Party comes in.

Originally, The Simpsons Movie was set to feature a momentary cameo from Edward Norton doing his (perfect) Woody Allen impression, with the Fight Club actor playing a nervous bystander who is crushed by the descending dome when he can’t decide which side of it he should stand on. Worried that he’ll be trapped if he stays inside but alone if he leaves, the civilian ends up having the decision made for him when the dome simply crushes him and leaves him (alongside Simpsons characters like Dr. Nick and the Bomb Disposal Robot) as one of The Simpsons Movie’s few casualties. If viewers recall that gag it’s because it did end up in the movie proper, but the character was no longer voiced by Norton when the film was finished. The scene was cut as the crew felt Norton’s impersonation was too distracting, leading Homer Simpson’s voice actor Dan Castellaneta to re-record the dialogue with a more neutral delivery.

Fast forward to 2016, and Norton reprised this spot-on Woody Allen impression for a far larger role in the adult animation Sausage Party, wherein he plays a neurotic bagel (and makes some regrettably tasteless Israel/Palestine jokes). The R-rated 3D animation, whose release was plagued by allegations of underpaying animators, saw Norton’s Allen impersonation used extensively as one of the movie’s main characters, a stereotypically Jewish bagel.

While Sausage Party was uneven, Norton’s impression received plenty of praise from critics and fans alike and was generally seen as one of the movie’s high points. As such, it’s just as well the creators of The Simpsons Movie kept Norton’s skill as a celebrity impersonator under wraps for the intervening nine years, as many critics felt Sausage Party needed all the pleasant surprises it could muster. Only time will tell whether The Simpsons Movie 2 will feature a return from Norton as an Allen-like nerd or a new character, if indeed the sequel ever comes to fruition at all.
