The Suicide Squad released globally last weekend, and although the movie certainly led the box office in the US, it didn’t exactly put up impressive numbers. According to Variety, the movie made roughly $26.5 million domestically and another $35 million globally, for a grand total box office take of $72.2 mil so far.

That’s below what analysts expected (which was around $30 million domestically), but it also wasn’t all that surprising. The Suicide Squad had several things working against it, not the least of which is the ongoing pandemic. The sudden surge of the Delta variant is keeping lots of people at home even in localities that don’t have any restrictions on businesses or personal travel. On top of that, the movie was released on both HBO Max and in just over 4,000 theatres across the nation, and as the past year has shown, most folks will likely opt to watch a movie at home rather than in the middle of a crowded theatre during a pandemic.

It’s also an R-rated movie, and those typically don’t do as well as lower-rated films just because of a more limited audience.

Although the financials aren’t looking good for The Suicide Squad, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad movie. Rotten Tomatoes has Suicide Squad certified fresh at 91%, with 84% of users agreeing that it’s worth your money–it just might not be worth catching COVID. It’s also worth noting that Suicide Squad is very likely to make back its money over lifetime sales, especially when the movie becomes available to rent on other streaming services.

In other movie news, Black Widow has surpassed F9 as the most profitable film released in the US this year, hitting $174.4 million compared to F9’s $171 million. F9 is still crushing Black Widow globally, however, with $661.4 million in worldwide sales compared to $359.8 million for Black Widow.
