Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy has a brilliant cast, extraordinary yet relatable characters, a plotline full of the unexpected, and simultaneously frustrating and amazing cliffhangers. The series introduced many new characters allowing for different dynamics to be shown, and more chaos to ensue.

The Hargreeves siblings weren’t let off easy in season 2, which let the audience learn more about their characters. Diego Hargreeves was no exception, as he had some great moments, and some not so great moments during the series.

10 WORST: Attacking Hazel

The Umbrella Academy 5 Times Diego Was The Best (& 5 Times He Was The Worst)

Hazel went to The Umbrella Academy on a mission to make peace with Five and get out of The Temps Commission. But before he could do so, Diego attacked him. Now, Diego thought he was justified in his actions. He thought he was getting justice for Eudora.

But this wasn’t a fight the audience wanted him to win. And as it turned out, Cha-Cha was the person responsible for the kill shot. Audience members thanked Five for his intervention, and Diego received some sound advice from his brother.

9 BEST: His Compassion

The Umbrella Academy 5 Times Diego Was The Best (& 5 Times He Was The Worst)

Diego is shown to be a fighter. He’s rough and sullen, and he experiences lots of growth during seasons 1 and 2 of the series. In season 2, audiences are shown more of his personality, especially his compassion. In a moment to remember, Diego comforts Lila’s unease about the future with a story about yogurt. He tells her how just because something isn’t understood, it doesn’t mean it isn’t real. He also lets Lila go at the end of the final episode because he loves her, and shared a moment with Vanya as they both processed their sacrifices.

Diego is also the only one who attempts to bury Elliot, the man who brought the siblings together by keeping track of them. Even though his efforts were interrupted, it was kind of him to try. An added bonus was witnessing his reunion with Ben and seeing his reaction.

8 WORST: Hero Complex

The Umbrella Academy 5 Times Diego Was The Best (& 5 Times He Was The Worst)

Diego has a hero complex. In season 1, he was focused on being a vigilante and working alone. In season 2, he was obsessed with saving the life of John F. Kennedy. Diego was trained and disciplined by his adopted father.

He grew up thinking that it was his duty to save the world. He was given a number and couldn’t fathom why he was number 2, why he wasn’t the leader. This has taken control of his life and becomes an obstacle for him to overcome. The world isn’t entirely on his shoulders alone.

7 BEST: The Infinite Switchboard Master

The Umbrella Academy 5 Times Diego Was The Best (& 5 Times He Was The Worst)

Before season 2, Five was the only one of The Umbrella Academy siblings to step foot in the Temps Commission. But all of that changed when Diego became involved with The Handler’s daughter.

Diego became associated with Herb and Dot after he forced Herb to activate The Infinite Switchboard and show John F. Kennedy’s assassination. This resulted in saving Vanya and stopping the impending apocalypse.

6 WORST: Killing Grace

The Umbrella Academy 5 Times Diego Was The Best (& 5 Times He Was The Worst)

Diego loved his mother. She was the only stable figure in his childhood and was the only one he could turn to for love and empathy. He didn’t want her to suffer, to spend years and years rotting away in a house that saw no life. He thought she was losing her mind and degrading.

So he killed her out of mercy. He did it without consulting any of his siblings or waiting for the vote results. Audience members are unaware of how sentient Grace was made to be by Reginald Hargreeves, although she appears to be more than just a mere android. Killing her made an impact on all the Hargreeves siblings.

5 BEST: Helping Klaus Get Clean

The Umbrella Academy 5 Times Diego Was The Best (& 5 Times He Was The Worst)

In season 1, Diego was one of the only siblings who paid Klaus any attention. And when the time came for Klaus to get clean, he asked Diego. The siblings also had hilarious moments during the series including their reaction to being mistaken for Five’s parents and gatecrashing Five’s meeting with Hazel and Cha-Cha by turning up in a stolen ice cream truck.

They were also supportive of each other’s emotions, as shown when Diego stood up for his brother during his period of mourning, and both of them showing concern towards Luther’s treatment of Vanya.

4 WORST: Power Struggle With Luther

The Umbrella Academy 5 Times Diego Was The Best (& 5 Times He Was The Worst)

For most of their lives, Diego and Luther have been dealing with their egos, so it isn’t a surprise it continued on into adulthood. In season 1 of the series, the two siblings let their power struggle get in the way of saving the world. But they eventually became closer and had some in-depth conversations.

Season 2 saw the two of them spending more time together, which led to some hilarious moments, especially their reaction to the message left by The Swedes. Diego even vetoed numbers altogether, wanting them to be Team Zero.

3 BEST: Standing Up To Reginald Hargreeves

The Umbrella Academy 5 Times Diego Was The Best (& 5 Times He Was The Worst)

Diego fought his father both in a battle of physical skills, and mental. And Reginald Hargreeves stabbed him and made him stutter from the impact of his cruel commentary. But it didn’t matter that Diego didn’t win.

He stood up to his father and called him out for the things he’d done and the things he didn’t care to admit but had affected the siblings’ lives from the moment they came into his care.

2 WORST: He Wasn’t There For Detective Patch

The Umbrella Academy 5 Times Diego Was The Best (& 5 Times He Was The Worst)

Detective Eudora Patch didn’t agree with Diego’s methods of fighting crime. He didn’t follow the rulebook or care about the law. He only cared about justice, no matter how it was achieved.

Patch told Diego she didn’t agree with his methods but he told her to try it his way for once. And that was what killed her. Yes, it wasn’t entirely his fault as she didn’t wait for him to come. But he convinced her to do it in the first place.

1 BEST: Bullet Trajectory Powers

In the series, Diego has been shown to control knives. He’s often throwing them from around corners and doing vigilante tricks. But that’s about it. It was in the last episode of season 2, “The End Of Something,” where his powers took a whole new turn.

When hundreds of Commission assassins shot their bullets at the Hargreeves siblings, they didn’t get very far. Diego became like Magneto and changed their course in an awesome moment of superhero magnificence.
